Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
The core functions of this position are to complete abstractions on medical records of children reported with targeted conditions and serve as an educational resource to the public, health care providers and birthing facilities. The Abstractor will work in INSTEP, the Indiana Birth Defects and Problems Registry & other newborn screening applications as needed. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
1. This position will work remotely to complete medical chart abstractions on children reported to the Indiana Birth Defects and Problems Registry with a targeted condition. 2. Assist the Program Manager and IT staff in identifying technical issues in the web-based application used for abstracting and testing modifications to the system as requested. 3. Actively collaborate with program staff on program initiatives, development, and funding opportunities. 4. Collaborate with other Client agency programs to assist in larger scale projects in relation to infant mortality, maternal health, and pregnancy outcomes. 5. Assist in the development of education materials and webpage content. 6. Update and maintain the hospital contact list to request medical records and remote access to medical records. 7. Update and maintain standard internal documents for GNBS. 8. Triage public concerns and questions and forward to appropriate GNBS staff member.
Job Requirements: The Abstractor will preferably possess a bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Genetics, Biology or a closely related field. Clinical experience is preferred. Experience with database systems and web-based applications is strongly preferred. A background in newborn screening and birth defects is preferred but not required. Experience in working with hospital staff and physicians is also preferred. Excellent verbal and written communication skills is required. The Abstractor will work at the Client. The Abstractor must be culturally sensitive to and competent with diverse populations.
Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports: There are no supervisory responsibilities to this position.
Difficulty of Work: The work is broad in scope, involving complex issues that require analytical, decision-making, and administrative abilities. The Abstractor uses Federal and State regulations and guidelines, but judgment is required when evaluating and applying to individual situations.
Responsibility: Purposes and desired results of the program area are discussed with supervisor, and the Abstractor uses discretion in seeking technical instruction or in discussing problems with supervisor. Work is reviewed for general technical accuracy, conclusions, and compliance with Client policy.
Personal Work Relationships: The Abstractor works with agency staff, representatives from State and Federal agencies, health care providers, hospitals, and private individuals and groups to coordinate program activities and to resolve problem or disputed areas. Cooperative problem solving and persuasion is necessary in some situations.
Physical Effort: This position does not require extensive physical effort.
Working Conditions: The Abstractor works primarily remotely. Some travel may be required.
