School Adjustment Counselor


Walpole Public Schools is seeking an Adjustment Counselor at Old Post Road Elementary School for the 2023-2024 school year.


Responsibility:

The School Adjustment Counselor (certified SAC and/or Social Worker School Psychologist) is responsible to the Building Principal and to the Educational Specialist for Special Education for the coordination, supervision and delivery of social services in accordance with Chapter 766.


Role:

The School Adjustment Counselor is part of the Building Evaluation Team (BET) and the Student Assistance Team (SAT). The BET is the prereferral team responsible to identify and assess the use and evaluation of all regular education supports before a student is referred for a special education evaluation. The SAC is a consultant to the BET and attends those meetings based on the needs of the student being discussed before the team.


The Student Assistance Team meets regularly to provide immediate academic/behavioral support to identified students who are experiencing change in their ability to learn, to interact and to participate in the activities of school. The SAC attends regularly scheduled meetings of the SAT.


Function:

The duties of the School Adjustment Counselor are as follows:

  • Direct Services to children and families.
  • Individual/small group counseling services to students.
  • Crisis Intervention
  • Consultation to classroom teachers.
  • Development and implementation of student behavior plans.
  • Consultation to families.
  • Case management.
  • SAC will act as building liaison for identified students.
  • SAC acts as liaison with social service agencies, families and provides channel for feedback to building level.
  • Updated resource file will be maintained in social work office for school personnel’s reference.
  • When requested, the School Adjustment Counselor will coordinate and supervise home visit assessments – under Chapter 766 “The Home visit is conducted in order to determine the attitude and goals of the parents regarding the child” and “to determine how the child behaves in the home and relates to his peers and family.”
  • Responsibilities of the Home Visitor: “Maximize parental involvement in planning and implementing their child’s educational program.”
  • Make home visits and write up home visit assessments.
  • Invite parents to conference concerning their child.
  • Represent parents’ point of view at conferences they are unable to attend.
  • Follow up with parents after educational plan has been implemented.
  • In-Service Training
  • Teacher training around behavior management, drug and alcohol use, depression and other possible student issues.
  • Teacher training programs in effective communication around student needs.
  • Ongoing awareness training regarding services offered by Social Workers.
  • SAC functions as a consultant member of the Building Evaluation Team and as a sitting member of the Student Assistance Team. In addition, the SAC directs the Peer Mediation and Conflict Resolution Program.
  • tend regular meetings of the SAT to determine student specific supports.

  • Direct the problem resolution process for the Peer Mediation and Conflict Resolution Program.
