The Admissions Advisor is responsible for providing services to meet student needs for admission to the college and to support institutional activities. This person works with other staff in the unit to plan and implement departmental projects. A general knowledge of all offerings and programs, purposes and goals of the institution is the responsibility of the Admissions Advisor. Specific duties include: admissions interviewing with prospective students, providing information, and making referrals to other institutional resources. Additional responsibilities include supporting the recruitment program, the assessment center, and the division as a whole. The Admissions Officer must have a working knowledge of offerings and programs, purposes and goals of the institution.
Duties/Functions
- Conduct Admissions interviews with prospective students and parents in person or virtually. Advise and recommend courses and/or programs to prospective students.
- Support college recruitment program by conducting off campus schools visits and presentations.
- Evaluate students’ prior academic history to accurately apply standards of the RISE placement model. Make referrals to Assessment Center when appropriate.
- Stay current on NC Residency Determination Service procedures and NC residency statute. Advise students on steps necessary to complete initial classification, reconsideration and appeals.
- Use various computer systems to advise students on steps necessary to enroll. Be able to import and process data from system office, CFNC and other remote systems.
- Work effectively with traditional, non-traditional, and multicultural post-secondary students and prospective students
- Use superior customer service skills in all areas, both internally and externally.
- Participate in campus wide programs to support the College and Student Support Services as a whole.
- Demonstrate and model the College’s employability skills: adaptability, communication, information processing, problem solving, responsibility and teamwork.
- Participate in national, regional and state professional development initiatives to improve knowledge and skill base.
- Maintain confidentiality of student records.
- Establish and maintain effective relationships with students, faculty, staff, administration, and the general public.
- Keeping up to date on all college programs and staying versed in all areas of student services.
- Providing equal service in person or at a distance.
- Flexibility of schedule including nights and weekends occasionally.
- Daily: Perspective Students/families, Admissions Director and Admissions Staff
- Daily: Other student services departments
- Several Times a week: Staff and Faculty from other departments
- Monthly: Adult Basic Ed and Workforce Development
Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited post-secondary institution
Education Preferred
Master’s degree in Education, Social Work, Counseling or related field from a regionally accredited post-secondary institution
Experience Required
- A minimum of two years experience within a higher education environment.
- Experience working with diverse students including first generation college students, students from under-represented populations, and students transitioning from adult high school programs.
- Demonstrated knowledge of College Admissions and student success initiatives.
- Ability to utilize data to assess practices and effectiveness of programs
- Knowledge of current and emergent practices in higher education which facilitate student success.
- Strong computer skills
- Knowledge of Microsoft and Colleague
- Exhibited skill in interpersonal relations, verbal and written communications.
- Presentation skills including public speaking, virtual presentations and presentation design/development.
- Knowledge of community college practices and philosophy.
- Strong understanding of the mission of the community college and a focus on student success.
The following (compliance) training is required and must be completed within the first 30 days of hire with annual refresher training thereafter:
