Summary
This position is responsible for the enhancement of Daybreak Foods, Inc. culture of sustainability and animal care:
- By implementing best practices, sustaining programs and policies, improving Daybreak Foods animal husbandry, livestock handling practices (including animal health), and biosecurity
- Performing and verifying audits to measure progress and compliance to programs
- Communicating and advocating for continuous improvement of the animal welfare and sustainability culture
Key Responsibilities
- Partner with location managers on animal care, welfare, and compliance issues
- Observe animal welfare by walking Layer and pullet barns with site leadership team
- Actively engage all employees in living the Animal Care Code of Conduct and communicate the company core values of providing for the animals entrusted to our care
- Training and implementation of company programs (e.g., Animal care, SE prevention, biosecurity, emergency response, sustainability) in the production department
- Help train, implement, and collate sustainability documents, programs, and data
- Assure a consistent animal care and welfare program is maintained across all locations
- Maintain audit programs to assure consistent compliance and animal care.
- Support the supplier/vendor certification program for animal handling, egg production and feed milling and feed ingredient suppliers by developing standards, audits, and documentation that meet DBF core values.
- Other auditing functions as deemed necessary.
- Annual assessment of animal care and welfare standards
- Stay informed and support implementation of future standards in animal care and welfare
- All other duties as directed by the Director of Director of Animal Welfare & Sustainability
Qualifications

Education and/or Experience
- 2+ years animal husbandry and welfare, milling, food safety, auditing experience
- Quality system experience highly desired
- A college degree highly desired (feed production, food safety &quality, animal science, agriculture or related field is preferred)
- Training in animal welfare, behavior, and health
- Auditor Certification (e.g., SQF, PHT, ASQ, PAACO)
- Computer literacy, including proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Experience in egg production, feed and/or food processing or poultry grow-out, animal welfare is highly desirable
- Must be able to work independently
- Must have good organizational skills, able to work on multiple tasks, excellent communication skills, attention to detail.
- Able to travel on overnight trips as needed.
- Able to work in a food and animal production facility
- Willingness to take on new tasks and learn new skills
- Formal and informal leadership skills and abilities
- Ability to work in a team environment and motivate employees to work within company parameters as well as learn new skills
- Proficient in abilities to interact with customers, vendors, and government agencies.
- Continue poultry health, care and welfare education through industry recognized events, programs, and classes.
- Holds a valid driver’s license without restrictions for travel.
- Able to work flexible schedule, extended hours to meet needs
Physical Demands
Sit, use keyboard, use fine manipulation with hands and fingers. Lift up to 10 pounds.
Work Environment
Clean, temperature-controlled environment. Noise level is low. No personal protective equipment needed.
