The Position:

The Cultural Arts Office is looking for an arts instructor who may have experience teaching and building arts curriculum in multiple arts disciplines: Visual Arts, Dance, Theatre, Music, Textiles, Media Arts and Literary Arts. As part of the 2018 Arts and Culture Master Plan, this position may teach at various locations around the city as part of a mobile outreach strategy to reach more communities around Carlsbad. Current locations include: all three Carlsbad libraries, Leo Carrillo Ranch, Batiquitos Lagoon and at Carlsbad parks.


Key Responsibilities

  • Lead effective questioning strategies, teach new art concepts and engage students in interactive art activities

  • Lead hands-on art making projects or participatory activities that connect to the specific theme or arts discipline

  • Work in collaboration with Library & Cultural Arts and Parks & Recreation full-and part-time staff, along with many talented volunteers, to ensure and maintain a cohesive high-quality arts program

  • Teach school age children during the school year and summer

  • Teach workshops and activities for adults and teens

  • Host community art activities

Qualifications

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have knowledge of:

  • Lesson plan development tied to California State Standards

  • Various art vocabulary and art mediums

  • Basic principles of classroom teaching and management

  • Artful Thinking Routines

  • Studio Habits of Mind


Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in developing curriculum for all ages in multiple arts disciplines as a teacher in schools or in a nonprofit setting

  • Experience teaching in more than one arts discipline, for example: Dance, Theatre, Music, Visual Arts, etc.

  • Ability and experience creating content and curriculum collaboratively as part of a group and can work well on a team

  • Creative, innovative approach and experiences related to arts education in nontraditional settings


Demonstrate the Ability to:

  • Utilize good communication and presentation skills

  • Be dependable, flexible and patient

  • Collaborate, forward thinking and teamwork

  • Be well-organized and able to handle multiple tasks; have excellent problem solving and decision-making skills; demonstrate initiative and good follow through

  • Work with students of varying skills and grade levels

  • Provide support to scheduled city volunteers in a meaningful way

  • Creatively engage participants of all ages


Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this class, an employee is regularly required to sit, walk and stand. While performing the duties, employees of this class are regularly required to use written and oral communication skills; observe and interpret people and situations; learn and apply new information or skills; and interact with staff and others encountered in the course of work. When performing courier duties, employee must be able to safely lift, move, carry and handle up to 50 pounds.

Experience & Education

Bachelor’s Degree in Visual Art, Dance, Theatre, Music, Media Arts, Literary Arts and/or Art Education is required, and a minimum of two years’ teaching experience. Experience and ease in using Microsoft Office Suite: OneDrive, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Teams, and Outlook.
