Job description
The Office of Secondary Schools is comprised of the Graduation Excellence division, instructional superintendents who support DCPS middle and high schools, and college and career programs and athletics. The Office is responsible for effective management, and operation and achievement of the middle and high schools, and provides leadership to principals, administrators, and teachers to ensure academic excellence for all students.
The Student Engagement Division plays a critical role in working directly with schools to ensure all students are engaged in school and feel supported with everything they need to succeed in DCPS and beyond. The Student Engagement Division includes:
- School Counseling team, which ensures students in all grades have access to the social-emotional skills and academic supports they need to succeed.
- New Heights program, which is comprised of school-based coordinators dedicated to serving the needs of expectant and parenting students in DCPS.
- Postsecondary Planning team, which is comprised of school-based coordinators who help students identify and actively pursue their postsecondary plans.
- Graduation team, which supports schools in monitoring student progress and identifying supports for students who are off-track of may have disengaged from schooling.
- Academic Recovery and Pathways programming, including the Twilight program, which are school-based programs that target off-track and at-risk students.
The Assistant, Athletics provides administrative support to the entire Athletics division. These job duties include but are not limited to: managing schedules, coordinating meetings and events, tracking expenditures, and building relationships with multiple internal departments.
The Assistant, Athletics will report to the Director, Athletics.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

- Coordinates several small or medium-sized projects related to the Athletics division's initiatives and goals.
- Schedules important events and meetings for the Athletics division, such as transportation and city-wide events.
- Schedules and coordinates program-related meetings, conferences, appointments, and logistics.
- Evaluates the nature of obstacles and determines the best DCPS staff to overcome them; and tracks and follows up until issue is resolved.
- Builds relationships and liaises with various internal Offices to drive collaboration and project success.
- Assists Director, Athletics with project planning and technical support.
- Tracks and reports on the progress of projects through use of various computer programs and tools.
- Refines and improves project management process; identifies patterns/trends in issues across multiple projects; and develops longer-term, systematic solutions to address them.
Assists Director, Athletics with the planning and implementing of the athletics social media strategy to include photo and video posting content.
Provides support for regular season, playoff, and championship logistics for designated sports events.
Qualifications
- Associate’s degree OR one year of experience.
- Previous exposure to or experience in the education sector a plus.
- Experience working within Athletics.
- Proven track record in managing and coordinating projects.
- Results-orientation coupled with strong work ethic.
- Detail orientation.
- Exceptional interpersonal skills.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and the ability to manage multiple databases.
- Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and be a self-starter; and comfort with ambiguity.
- Ability to create and administer photo and video content on all social media platforms.
- Ability to exercise good judgment in quickly dealing with difficult situations and unexpected challenges.
