Job description
**$2,000 Sign-on Bonus**

PRIMARY FUNCTION & RELATIONSHIP TO TOTAL ORGANIZATION
Provides nursing care for patients, participates in patient and family teaching and provides leadership by working cooperatively with other health care team members. Collaborates with physicians and other health care workers to assess plan, implement and evaluate patient care while maintaining standards for professional nursing practice in the clinical setting. Successful performance contributes to a holistic approach to the delivery of services, improved patient care, and a high level of satisfaction from patients and families.
REPORTS TO: Department Supervisor
SUPERVISES: None
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Provides and coordinates nursing care to patients utilizing the nursing process.
2. Completes documentation in a manner that assures an accurate record of patient’s care.
3. Utilizes critical thinking in making independent judgment, and maintains responsibility for the knowledge of conditions of assigned patients.
4. Collaborates with physicians and other professionals in planning and implementing care within OOSC’s policies and legal limitations.
5. Consults with Supervisor when appropriate.
6. Assesses needs of patients and families, provides appropriate teaching to facilitate discharge planning, and makes the necessary referrals to community agencies to provide continuity of care.
7. Demonstrates professional development by keeping abreast of current nursing practice and healthcare trends.
8. Utilizes a holistic approach (considering physical, psych/social, spiritual, educational, safety, and related criteria) appropriate to the age of the patients served in the assigned service area.
9. Provides patient care based on clinical assessment and within scope of practice.
10. Performs inventory checks and orders appropriate level of supplies, if assigned. Assures proper functioning of equipment and instruments.
11. Demonstrates competencies specific to the requirements of the department to provide safe patient care.
12. Demonstrates initiative to improve quality and customer service.
13. Consistently meets the department’s assigned work schedule.
14. Consistently delivers high quality care demonstrating knowledge and clinical skills of the specialty required on assigned unit in accordance with established policies and procedures and standards of care.
15. Balances team and individual responsibilities, objective and open to other’s views, gives and welcomes feedback, contributes to positive team goals, puts success of team above own interest.
OTHER FUNCTIONS:
1. Performs functions other than described due to extenuating circumstances.
2. Assists with staff development by presenting education programs.
3. Participates in quality improvement monitoring and compliance.
EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE:
1. Current Iowa License to practice as a Registered Nurse.
2. Writes, reads, and speaks fluent English.
3. Ability to learn basic computer skills
4. Minimum one year experience in perioperative nursing.
MENTAL/COGNITIVE DEMANDS:
1. Must be able to communicate effectively with people of diverse professional, educational and lifestyle backgrounds.
2. Able to work in an environment that may cause high stress levels due to frequent interruptions, dealing with urgent issues, and working with a wide variety of professionals and personalities.
3. Must possess basic math skills to calculate drug dosages.
4. Must be able to work independently and assume responsibility for timely completion of assigned functions.
5. Must be able to follow verbal and written instructions and maintain confidentiality.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
1. Performs Department of Labor, Level IV tasks (heavy work). Maximum lifting of 100 pounds; frequent lifting of up to 50 pounds. Bending, standing and walking a minimum of 6 hours out of 8 hours.
2. Must be able to operate and handle many kinds of complex equipment.
3. Speaking and hearing are essential to the position.
4. The physical demands of the job including standing, carrying, pushing, sitting, handling, color vision, walking, stooping, seeing, reaching, fingering, bending, feeling, depth perception, lifting, pulling, talking.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
1. Works in well-illuminated, climate-controlled area with varying noise levels.
2. Involvement in patient care may result in unavoidable work related injury for illness.
3. May come in contact with hazardous chemicals or treatment modalities.
4. Possibility of exposure to communicable disease.
