Role description
RWE is looking for a Commercial Analyst to join our team, Commercial Analysis Americas. This role covers the detailed analysis of all renewable technologies (Onshore & Offshore wind, Solar PV, Batteries) and several commodities (power, fuels, green certificates) in the North American power markets in which RWE Renewables is active. The main focus of this role is on the Eastern Interconnection in the United States.
Commercial Analysis is responsible to provide commercial inputs to the financial decisions such as investment, acquisition, divestment, PPA execution, commodity trading etc. to fulfill the growth plan of RWE Renewables, 5 billion Euros investment by 2022. The role comprises identifying, analyzing, and quantifying revenue streams for renewables e.g. ancillary services markets, capacity auctions or portfolio benefits. In addition to that, challenges regarding intermittency and curtailment analysis is of growing importance.
The position requires a high affinity for numerical work, and handling of large amount of data and can therefore also include coding tasks. You will be part of a highly dynamic, international and geographically diverse team which comes along with occasional travel, working remotely and demonstrating a pro-active and autonomous approach to work.
Responsibilities
- Analyze the short/medium/long-term development in various US power markets, focused on the Eastern Interconnection (MISO, PJM, NYISO, SERC, SPP) based on a thorough understanding of market fundamentals, regulatory development, renewable penetration, storage growth, etc.
- Analyze and provide forecasts of energy commodity prices (power, ancillary services, capacity, renewable energy certificates, natural gas, etc.), either using internal models or by engaging with external consultants. Affinity to statistical / time series analysis or fundamental energy market modeling is helpful.
- Perform data / statistical analysis using large datasets, visualize and communicate key insights. This requires advanced data analytic skills, handling large amount of data like hourly wind / solar generation and market prices, visualizing results, and deriving key insights.
- Ad hoc market analysis reports (e.g., in case of market disruptions like the Coronavirus crisis).
Work experience requirements
- Knowledge of US power markets and experience with the economics of renewable energy sources.
- Solid understanding of power market fundamentals and commodity market and price risks
- Strong quantitative skills, paying attentions to detail but not losing sight of key messages
- Strong communication skills and ability to work in a diverse, international team
- Strong Excel skills, i.e., should be able to use functionalities at an expert level. This includes working with macros and VBA functions, integrating Excel with external data sources. Programming skills (e.g., Python) are also advantageous
- One to three years industrial or research experiences in power and commodity markets
Education requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in an analytical / numerical subject, preferably Economics, Engineering, or Mathematics
- A Master’s degree considered advantageous for this role
