Definition:
Under the general supervision of the Communications Center Manager or a Shift Supervisor, receive and respond to 911 emergency and non-emergency calls for assistance from the public.

Principal Duties:
- Receive emergency and non-emergency calls from the public requesting police, fire, or ambulance assistance; determine the nature and location of the emergency, level of assistance needed, the priority of response, and dispatch emergency units as necessary and by established procedures.
- Enter call information into a computer-aided dispatch system.
- Enter, update and retrieve information from computerized local, state, and national crime information networks relating to wanted persons, stolen property, vehicle registration, stolen vehicles, and other information.
- Perform emergency medical dispatch when necessary per established EMD procedures.
Working Environment:
- Work is performed in a highly isolated and secured area with restricted movement.
- Requires working varied shifts including evenings, nights, weekends & holidays.
- Work involves extended periods of sitting while working closely with others with occasional periods of working alone.
- Requires the operation of specialized communications equipment including radios, emergency operations computer equipment, and early warning systems including a variety of software.
- Requires the ability to listen, communicate, and speak enough to be understood on radio & telephone; the ability to perform repetitive motion at a keyboard/console on an intermittent basis for 4-5 hours/shift; skill in making effective decisions under stressful conditions, performing multiple tasks simultaneously, and remaining calm during emergencies.
- Must be able to exercise good judgment, make sound decisions, read maps, and perform duties on varied shifts.
- Requires demonstrated ability to read and understand the English language.
Qualifications:
- Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade plus two years of work experience involving public contact, preferably involving telephone or dispatch experience.
- Special Qualifications: Keyboarding skills of 35 wpm minimum.
- Bilingual English/Spanish skills are preferred.
- Ability to obtain will train, within 6 months of hire, certifications in Emergency Medical Dispatching, CBI computer operation, and CPR.
