Overview

Mativ is currently searching for a Corporate Counsel, IP for our in-house legal department to support the organization’s global operations. Under the direction of Mativ’s Chief IP Counsel, this role will provide legal counsel, advice and guidance for Mativ’s operations globally, with a focus on Mativ’s intellectual property portfolio and innovation growth platform, general commercial and corporate responsibilities, and litigation management. The ideal candidate must have the ability to manage and protect the organizations Intellectual Property assets, provide counsel to the business regarding patent matters, trademarks, copyright matters, and domain names, and provide advice on transactional matters with regard to issues involving Intellectual Property, confidentiality, and emerging technologies.

Responsibilities

  • Provide (or manage the provision of) legal counsel, advice and guidance in connection with Neenah’s global operations, as directed, to ensure maximum protection of Mativ’s legal rights, mitigation of legal risks and continued legal compliance.
  • Manage portions of Mativ’s IP portfolio relating to several Mativ business units, including the development, prosecution and support of patents, the development and protection of trademarks, copyrights and the documentation and protection of Mativ’s trade secrets.
  • Partner with the Innovation team to manage and provide support for the organization’s intellectual property portfolio as part of Mativ’s long-term strategy to invest in and grow.
  • Provide counsel to Mativ’s business units negotiating and reviewing commercial contracts, licenses, joint development agreements and advice on general corporate matters.
  • Collaborate with and supervise outside counsel when needed.
  • Advise the company on patent and trade secret litigation-related issues.
  • Coordinate and actively participate in internal discovery activities.
  • Support Mativ’s Chief IP Counsel and other members of senior legal department as requested in connection with other legal matters.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree and Juris Doctor degree required as well as an active bar membership in at least one US jurisdiction.
  • Active USPTO patent bar membership.
  • 6-8+ years of related experience, including legal practice with a law firm, government agency or legal department.
  • Domestic and International Travel
  • Excellent drafting skills with keen attention to detail.
  • Exceptional judgment and range to quickly analyze complex legal and business issues involving a wide variety of products, services and business settings.
  • Excellent verbal/written communications skills.
  • Strong organizational and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision required.
  • Domestic and international travel will be required.
  • Ability to work effectively with and manage outside legal counsel, investigators, and other outside service providers.
  • Consultative approach with the ability to analyze situations, synthesize, and recommend solutions that mitigate legal risk.
  • Excellent communication and consulting skills with the ability to engage, motivate and influence stakeholders and senior leaders; the ability to interface with all levels of the organization.
  • Exhibits good general business sense and strong judgment.
  • High level capability to multi-task in a dynamic environment.
  • Very strong attention to detail, accuracy and on time performance as well as excellent organizational skills.
  • Solution-focused and flexible to adapt to the needs of the business.
  • Demonstrates a proactive approach and collaborative style.

Preferred:

  • Previous in-house experience with intellectual property and general corporate matters is preferred.
