Dance Specialist– Afterschool

REPORTS TO:

Program Director

Flatbush Development Corporation is seeking a qualified individual for the position of part-time Dance Specialist for their middle school afterschool program. The Dance Specialist will work closely with the Program Director to create a dynamic dance and movement program in which students develop knowledge, skills and confidence in different types dance methods, and genres. This position is responsible for creating, implementing, and managing daily activities related to dance and movement. A successful candidate will bring previous teaching experience, creativity

and self-initiative to this position, along with a passion for positive youth development.

This is a part-time position working Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 2:30 to 5:30pm during the school year. There will be additional hours required for any special performances or events.

Primary Responsibilities

• Plan and facilitate workshops for middle school students focused on dance

• Develop and implement a sequenced dance curriculum, with assistance from the education specialist.

• Submit lesson/activity plans to program director in advance.

• Plan and implement a culminating event or project at the end of each cycle.

• Provide instruction to participants, correct their techniques, and assist struggling students on a one on one basis.

• Educate participants about the different dance genres that they are learning, by providing them with cultural and historical context whenever applicable

• Attend all staff meetings and staff development training sessions, as specified.

• Maintain and submit attendance records.

• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent required, some college or relevant degree preferred.

• Two years of experience in teaching dance and leading youth in group activities required, preferably in an afterschool setting.

• Must be able to pass fingerprint and SCR clearances successfully.

• Must be able to engage young people and set structure and limits in a group setting.

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

• Must be reliable and punctual.
