The New York City Fire Department (FDNY) is seeking a Deputy Commissioner of Public Information. The Deputy Commissioner of Public Information is chiefly responsible for the strategic management of the agency’s overarching public information strategy, dissemination of critical information during emergency situations and showcasing the FDNY’s mission and core values.

Responsibilities of the Deputy Commissioner, Public Information will include:

  • Oversee the Department’s internal and external public information efforts.
  • Develop messages to the public before, during and after emergencies.
  • Oversee all staff members of the Press and Communications Office.
  • Coordinate message development with public information officers from local, state, and federal government agencies, as well as nongovernmental and nonprofit organizations, private-sector partners, and other relevant stakeholders.
  • Provide media outlets and professionals with agency objectives as it relates to mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery efforts to ensure factual and accurate information is issued to the public.
  • Support the executive staff’s communications efforts.
  • Cultivate relationships with media and external stakeholders to facilitate coverage of agency projects and initiatives.
  • Oversee and manage Department ceremonies and events.
