Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Job Function)

Represent Northern Natural Gas Company in verbal and written interaction with federal, state and local environmental agencies as well as at industry meetings and public hearings.

Coordinate and provide technical direction to field operations teams, engineering, regulatory and construction personnel to implement and enforce environmental policy.

Assist the director of environmental affairs in building a program and public reputation of excellence in environmental matters.

Provide primary environmental consultation to the regional director.

Typical Duties

Represent Northern Natural Gas Company in verbal and written interaction with federal, state and local environmental agencies as well as at industry meetings and public hearings.

Prepare and submit environmental reports to environmental agencies.

Manage remediation of sites to ensure compliance with regulations, permits and agency consent orders.

Prepare and submit reports to management on environmental compliance issues and recommend changes.

Prepare and submit environmental permit applications, as required.

Maintain a working knowledge of current federal, state and local environmental laws and regulations, which impact operations.

Interpret these regulations and provide training to company personnel to ensure compliance with all above requirements.

Assist in preparation and implementation of operating and capital budgets.

Assure compliance with environmental rules and regulations while protecting the environment, conserving resources and minimizing company exposure to fines and penalties.

Critically review environmental scope, file permits, train and audit construction activities. Issue a matrix to the appropriate personnel to approve all ground disturbing projects and other projects with an environmental effect.

Write and/or critically review environmental procedures.

Review, comment and communicate new environmental legislation and regulations.

Provide technical leadership to staff.

Provide technical input to assist in development of project planning.

Perform additional responsibilities as requested or assigned.

Qualifications


Bachelor's degree in environmental science, engineering, business administration or related technical field; or equivalent work experience. (Typically six years of related, progressive work experience would be needed for candidates applying for this position who do not possess a bachelor's degree.)

Six or more years of related work experience in the environmental field.

Effective oral and written communication skills.

Excellent human relations skills to coordinate and interface with sometimes conflicting interest groups to achieve mutually satisfactory results.

Effective analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills.

Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks and projects concurrently.

Support the company's employee policies and procedures, including workplace safety rules.
