Description
The Division of Forestry is Kentucky’s designated forest steward, whose mission is to protect, conserve and enhance the forest resources of the Commonwealth. The Division has more than 100 years of public service, and is committed to assisting landowners with improving their timber stands, preventing and suppressing wildfires, protecting water quality during commercial timber harvesting operations, and delivering forestry-related education throughout the Commonwealth.
The Forest Ranger Technician I (FRT) is a highly skilled team member, charged with ensuring the programmatic integrity of numerous forestry-related programs, and the consistent delivery of services to the public. During the performance of their assigned duties, the FRT interacts daily/weekly with branch personnel, branch management and supervision, and division program staff.

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
- Performs Wildland Fire Prevention, Suppression, Law Enforcement, and Related Activities
- Conducts Timber Harvesting Compliance Inspections and Regulatory Enforcement
- Provides Forest Management Technical Assistance
- Performs Forestry Education and Public Outreach
- A.S. Degree (preferred, but not required)
- Ability to work independently
- Effective communication, organization, and documentation skills
- Proficient knowledge and use of information technology
Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION: Graduate of a college or university with an associate's degree in the Biological or Physical Sciences.
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: NONE
Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: NONE
Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: Forest management experience will substitute for the associate's degree on the basis of two years of experience for one year of education.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Must possess a valid driver's license prior to appointment in this classification. Must be at least 21 years of age. Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this classification. Employing agency is responsible for ensuring employee possesses and maintains required licensure(s), certification(s) or other credentials.
Working Conditions
Work is typically performed outdoors on private forest lands. Work can be under adverse conditions due to weather, topography, or when suppressing wild land fires. Work also involves frequent contact with citizens and organizations in the promotion of forestry programs.
Probationary Period
This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
