We are seeking a Fuel Cell Test Engineer I to join our team. The Fuel Cell Test Engineer works with development teams to create performance and durability test plans. Execute testing to support the development and verification of advanced industrial and automotive fuel cell stacks in accord with commercial requirements of high performance, long life, and low cost.
Essential Job Responsibilities:
- Support technology and product development projects for fuel cell stacks. Uses sound judgment on how to voice concerns and make suggestions.
- Supports and develops new products and/or prototypes. Conducts development research and investigations.
- Implement and manage test campaigns to characterize component and fuel cell performances, generate operating maps, define preferred steady-state and dynamic operating conditions, identify design refinements, execute durability assessments, and gain insight into complex performance/durability/cost tradeoffs.
- Work on and/or support special experimentally-based projects, including validation of new materials and electrochemical packages, optimization of startup protocols from subfreezing conditions, reduction of conditioning time, contaminant tolerance studies, research on high power density operations, and collaborative projects with third parties.
- Utilize electrochemical diagnostics to conduct in-situ testing of fuel cell stacks, conduct post-service and failure analyses.
- Collect, reduce and analyze data, document and present findings; Write test reports and present findings to internal and external customers Lead or support troubleshooting efforts in test stands, systems, and product contexts.
- Work with development teams to create performance and durability test plans.
Required Job Qualifications (unless otherwise noted):
Educational Background
- Bachelor or MS (Chemical, Mechanical, or Electrochemical Engineering)
- 2 years development/engineering experience with emphasis on experimental work or equivalent education
Skills and Abilities
- Solid grounding in engineering fundamentals: electrochemistry, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, and heat & mass transfer, chemical kinetics, and materials.
- Strong and proactive problem solving and troubleshooting abilities
- Demonstrated ability and high level of interest for hands-on role to plan test campaigns, conduct experiments, and analyze data
- High level of versatility and interest to work with test equipment, including: fuel cell test stations, analytical instruments, and electrochemical diagnostics (cyclic voltammetry, impedance spectroscopy, hydrogen pump)
- Basic knowledge and facility with mechanical and electrical systems, e.g. tube-bending and Swagelok fittings, light wiring, and engineering instrumentation
- Familiarity with data acquisitions systems and process/test stand automation
- Facility with Microsoft Office suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word)
- Ability to work both independently and in team contexts, Comfort with a rapid development pace and ability to multitask, Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills
Travel Required
- Up to 5% domestic travel
- Laboratory and office work environments.
- Ability to lift components weighing up to 35 lbs. is required
