General Summary

GTI Energy is adding a Technician, GIS, to the Smart Utilities team. This position will collaborate with a team of Geographic Information System (GIS) professionals, scientists, and engineers in research and development projects featuring the latest industry technology. This position will be responsible for performing both field and office-based GIS tasks for energy research projects.

  • Candidates should have a wide range of experience using Esri ArcGIS products (Desktop, Server, Mobile)
  • An ideal candidate will have a background working in the surveying, engineering, or utility industries
  • Candidates should possess strong communication skills, the ability to work independently, with a team, and to interact with clients

Work Location

The position will be based in GTI Energy’s Des Plaines, Illinois, headquarters. The candidate must be able to work remotely to meet all federal, state, local, and company COVID guidelines. While local candidates are preferred, GTI Energy provides relocation assistance for the right candidate.


Primary Responsibilities
  • Communicate and collaborate with remote team members and individuals from a wide variety of backgrounds, both technical and non-technical
  • Perform field data collection utilizing GNSS and utility locating devices
  • Perform data input of spatial data under minimal supervision using ArcGIS
  • Compile, manipulate, and refine geographic data from a variety of sources, including public domain, field collection, satellite imagery, aerial photographs, and existing utility data
  • Interact with pipeline and environmental specialists to create spatial data visualizations
  • Write material for project reports and collaborate with team members to generate proposals
  • Investigate and report on emerging GIS related technology in the energy and environmental industries
  • Contribute to the generation of technology-based research project ideas for the energy industry


Required Technical Skills
  • Knowledge of ArcGIS Products (Desktop, ArcGIS Server, Survey 123, Field Maps, Collector, extensions)
  • Ability to use GIS to visualize data sets and perform analysis
  • Familiarity with mobile devices and operating systems
  • Understanding of using field-based GIS technology
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team environment
  • Ability to find, evaluate, learn and implement new technologies to meet customer needs and goals
  • Ability to travel to client sites to support project work in field settings


Preferred Technical Skills
  • Experience utilizing field-based data collection tools a plus
  • Environmental or pipeline related experience a plus
  • Augmented reality experience is a plus
  • Licensed drone pilot a plus
  • Data analysis, statistics, and data visualization experience a plus
  • Prior experience working at a professional research organization a plus


Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Geographic Information Systems, Environmental Science, Engineering, Computer Science or similar field preferred
  • 1-3 years of relevant work experience
