Job purpose
The Industrial Electrician will work as part of a team to install, test, troubleshoot and repair electrical wiring, fixtures, control devices and related equipment. This individual will have the ability to read and interpret drawings, blueprints, schematics and specifications in order to provide troubleshooting and repair services. The Industrial Electrician will also routinely perform preventative maintenance on all equipment and components in order to ensure the continued safe, efficient and effective operations of all equipment and fixtures utilized by the organization.
Duties and responsibilities
- Reading and interpreting specifications and blueprints
- Installing, servicing and repairing conduits, wiring and fixtures
- Conducting electronic inspections and tests
- Grounding electrical systems
- Servicing generators, motors and high voltage systems
- Performing electrical work on environmental regulating systems, pumps and industrial lighting systems
- Installing, maintaining and repairing heavy duty equipment and industrial communications systems
- Cleaning circuit boards and contacts
- Oiling motors and replacing wiring
- Troubleshooting and repairing electrical components
- Working with programmable logic/automation controls
- Discusses errors in diagrams or production order with supervisor or engineers to clarify issues and provide feedback to correct documentation.
- Able to design and install basic, nonstandard equipment.
- Prepares sketches showing location of wiring and equipment, or follows diagrams or blueprints, ensuring that concealed wiring is properly installed before unit completion.
- Plans new or modified installations to optimize use of materials, provide access for future maintenance and avoid unsightly, hazardous and unreliable wiring, consistent with specifications and local electrical codes.
- Mounts assembled components, such as control panels, electric drive motors and other electrical components, on vehicle chassis.
- Installs control and distribution apparatus such as switches, relays and circuit-breaker panels.
- Tests continuity of circuit to ensure electrical compatibility and safety of components with testing instruments such as VOM and Amp meter.
- Observes functioning of installed equipment or systems to detect hazards and need for adjustments, relocation or replacement.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
- 5 years of relevant experience and/or training.
- Read and interpret blueprints and have strong mathematic skills.
- Ability to use and read various Electrical Testing Equipment
- Possession of strong organizational skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Working conditions
- Indoor and outdoor environmental conditions. Activities occur inside and outside.
- Extreme heat. Temperatures above 100 degrees for periods of more than one hour. Consideration should be given to the effect of other environmental conditions, such as wind and humidity.
- Noise. There is sufficient noise to cause the worker to shout in order to be heard above ambient noise level.
- Vibration to the extremities or whole body.
- Hazards. Includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current or exposure to chemicals.
- Atmospheric conditions. One or more of the following conditions that affect the respiratory system of the skin; fumes, odors, dust, mists, gases, or poor ventilation.
- Small spaces. The worker may be required to function in narrow aisles or passageways.
- Though most work is done here in the shop, must be willing to travel as needed to work at a customer’s facility when the need arises.
Physical requirements
- Exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally
- Exert up to 30 pounds of force frequently
- Exert up to 10 pounds of force constantly
- Visual Acuity Requirements of the Position:
- The worker is required to have close visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of work assigned, inspect work, etc.
- Occasional lifting 50+ lbs.
- Prolonged standing
- Occasional work at height
- Regular lifting and reaching above the head level
