Job Description

The New Yorker is seeking a visionary, multi-talented editor to work on visual features. The role reports to The New Yorker’s Director of Interactives and collaborates with designers, developers, editors, and producers to create visually rich features connected to magazine stories and enterprise multimedia projects for newyorker.com and other platforms. This hybrid position offers the unique opportunity to work across mediums with New Yorker writers and artists on a wide range of story genres—humor, culture, politics, science, and investigative reporting.
Responsibilities:

Conceptualize ideas for interactive-first stories, and recurring forms; exercise creativity, strong editorial judgment, and taste in assignments to staff.

Serve as a point of contact for pitches and inquiries, with an eye toward identifying and developing new projects and initiatives, while cultivating a stable of contributors.

Serve as a creative custodian, troubleshooter, editor, and problem-solver on both current and upcoming projects, providing creative feedback and guiding contributors through our rigorous workflows.

Assign and edit visual features by staff and contributing writers, as well as other contributors for the Web site, integrating text, video, audio, photography, animation, and illustration.

Direct and project-manage the production of interactive features, including liaising with other departments, keeping all stakeholders apprised of progress, and insuring the timely publication of editorial content.

Manage staff and freelance contributors, including helping to insure writers or visual creators are meeting contracts and fulfilling other work expectations.

Work cross-functionally and creatively across all departments and with the heads of Video, Photography, Art, and Podcasts, in particular.

Commission, direct, and prepare media assets (video, audio, images, etc.) to be used in interactive features.

Maintain New Yorker standards at all times in editing for rigor, accuracy, and fairness.

Additional duties as required, or as assigned by the manager.
Requirements:

At least seven years of experience in visual journalism or editing.

Comfort engaging with a wide range of subjects, from politics to pop culture, from biology to technology.

Ability to think visually and quickly synthesize information in a clear, accurate, and intelligent manner.

Avid consumption of interactive storytelling and proven experience working with traditional and emerging forms for visual journalism.

Exceptional editorial judgment and strong line-editing skills; ability to work collaboratively with some of the finest writers in journalism.

Foundational understanding of user-centered design for interactive experiences.

A readiness to work in a fast-moving digital-media ecosystem and to juggle multiple projects and tasks.

Demonstrated ability to speak and write clearly and persuasively.

Fastidious attention to detail and organizational skills.

Exceptional research skills.

Familiarity with The New Yorker’s signature mix of storytelling and analysis.

Willingness to work some weekends, evenings, early mornings, and holidays, according to the demands of the news cycle.
