General Statement of Job
The Landfill Maintenance Worker performs routine and procedural manual duties under constant supervision. This position performs routine landfill operations, maintenance, and custodial duties, including operating a variety of machinery and equipment. Problems encountered are typically simple to general in nature.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Functions:
Monitor landfill for illegal and/or hazardous waste and assist with waste screening.
Operate and repair various types of landfill maintenance equipment, manual and power tools as required. Trains on more complex pieces of equipment of varying sizes.
Clean and repair residential drop off site as directed.
Assist with surveying operations to verify slopes and grades.
Perform grounds maintenance duties as assigned. Initiates and participates in cleanup activity.
Study applicable service manuals and participates in technical training and certification programs to stay abreast of technological changes.
Study regulatory manuals and participates in Waste Management Facilities training courses.
Attend meetings, volunteers readily, and seeks increased responsibility.
Perform other duties to provide direct or indirect service to the Service Authority members or customers as assigned.
When unusual situations occur and /or a local official declares a State of Emergency, all Services Authority employees may be required to accept and perform special assignments as needed to ensure appropriate service delivery.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Ability to learn Solid Waste Management Regulations regarding landfill, including identification of hazardous waste and other required training.
Ability to learn to safely operate heavy equipment such as loader and large trucks.
Ability to successfully complete a heavy equipment operator training within one year of employment.
Possess some mechanical knowledge or aptitude. Ability to learn to repair mechanical equipment.
General knowledge of hand tools and standard practices of labor operation.
Ability to work flexible schedules.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions given in English.
Ability to listen and obtain clarification.
Ability to speak in a way that is clear and precise about what is required and clearly relay information.
Possess common courtesy and basic communication skills to work within a team environment.
Ability to focus on solving conflict. Follows through, resolves and seeks feedback regarding questions, requests and/or complaints in a timely manner.
Ability to complete tasks as well as ask questions and seek feedback in a timely manner.
Ability to understand the implications of decisions.
Ability to learn new skills and translate experience into new skills.
Education and Experience
High school or completion of GED equivalent desired;
Heavy equipment operating experience desirable or successful completion of Heavy Equipment Operator training within one year of employment.
Valid Virginia Driver’s License; Successful completion of CDL license with tanker and related endorsements desired; must be able to obtain a CDL physical card;
Qualify for insurance under the Authority’s Insurance Policy; successfully pass drug screening, background check and references.
Successful completion of the following classes with certificate within two years:
- Landfill Gas Well Monitoring class
- Landfill Heavy Equipment Safety Training class
- Landfill Operator Training Course
- Waste Screening class
- Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan Training class.
- Other classes and licenses as required by the County or State.
Physical Conditions and Work Environment
The work is performed mainly outdoors where the job requires exposure to the weather conditions and hazardous conditions. The noise level of the working environment is loud. Work involves a high degree of physical strain. One may be asked to lift and carry 50 pound loads over rough terrain, climb on and off equipment of varying sizes, and work in all weather conditions.
