Job description
The Library Associate provides patrons with services and information at the library Circulation Desk, including checking library materials in/out and answering procedural/directional questions. Is responsible for developing and maintaining library reserve collections (hard copy and electronic), including processing reserve materials, creating reserve records in the library management system, and coordinating reserves-related communications with UHCL faculty. Receives and processes incoming items through the UH intercampus lending system. Acts as a backup to the circulation night manager.
Duties:
- Performs all Circulation desk duties including checking in and out materials using the library's automated patron database/catalog system (Alma), maintains patron records, and explains library circulation policies to patrons.
- Collects, processes, and maintains the library and personal faculty materials for the library's Reserves collection.
- Uses the Alma reserves module to create catalog records for reserve materials.
- Processes incoming paging materials. Removes expired holds from holds shelves and returns to home campuses. Notifies patrons of items ready for pickup.
- Creates and updates library signage related to hours, library events, and other information relevant to the public.
- Under the direction of the Interlibrary Loan Supervisor, processes interlibrary loan requests as needed.
- Participates in the supervision of 10-13 student employees. Screens applications, participate in student employee interviews and directs/monitors student employee activity
- Performs and oversees library opening and closing procedures and all aspects of the Circulation Desk when on the weekend or solo duty, and performs all other duties as assigned.
Required:
1. Bachelor's degree.
2. Minimum two years of library, office, or customer service experience.
3. Working knowledge of Alma (automated circulation system) to answer patron questions and locate information. Able to utilize the reserve and fulfillment subsystems.
4. Knowledge of copyright law, particularly fair use.
5. Excellent interpersonal skills and problem-solving abilities in working with patrons and staff. Ability to deal with library patrons with tact and diplomacy and to direct library student techs.
6. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
7. Ability to multitask, organize and prioritize tasks as necessary as well as the ability to work unsupervised at night and on weekends.
8. Good computer and data entry skills with a high degree of accuracy using Microsoft office (spreadsheets, word processing, and email).
9. Ability to supervise student employees when Circulation Supervisor is not present.
10. Knowledge of commonly used graphic design software (Canva, Microsoft Publisher). Ability to effectively communicate information to the public through signage.
