SUMMARY
Under minimal supervision performs complex set ups and operate conventional, special purpose or numerical control (CNC) machines and machining centers to fabricate metallic and nonmetallic parts.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under minimal supervision performs the following duties:
Interprets blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample part to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished workpiece, sequence of operations, and setup requirements.
Measures, marks, and scribes dimensions and reference points on material or workpiece as guides for subsequent machining.
Selects, aligns, and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines such as mills, lathes, jig borers, grinders, and shapers.
Calculates and sets controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, and depth and angle of cut, or enters commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control media.
Starts and observes machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining, and adjusts machine controls or control media as required.
Verifies conformance of finished workpiece to specifications.
Confers with engineers, production personnel, programmers, or others to resolve machining or assembly problems.
Must maintain a clean and efficient work station while maintaining safety standards and production efficiency levels.
Keep machine tools clean and in good working order.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Previous experience in machine shop processes of CNC or conventional applications. Specific tool sharpening abilities is required. Ability to apply concepts of basic math and trigonometry. Ability to read and interpret blueprint drawings. Experience with basic set up and control based programming. Ability to perform first article inspections using precision measuring and gauging instruments on parts being machined or fabricated. General understanding of the entire machining/manufacturing process.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
HS diploma or GED certificate and minimum of 5+ years of technical experience in a manufacturing environment and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience; Or educational equivalent of two year certificate from college or technical training school and 3+ years of technical experience in a manufacturing environment and/or training.
