This position is responsible for the receipt, inventory, storage, withdrawal, and
shipment of biological specimens, samples, and materials, from multiple commercial and government clients and stored at temperatures ranging from ambient to ‐196°C, having potentially hazardous properties. This position uses database applications and standard precautionary procedures to work independently, be self‐directed, communicate effectively, and make sound decisions. Internal or external client interaction occurs under the guidance of more experienced professional or technical staff.
Location: Rockville, MD
Work Schedule: 7:30AM to 4:30PM core hours with additional hours as the need arises
What will you do?
- Receives, handles and inventories biological specimens at temperatures ranging from ambient to -196°C (liquid nitrogen vapor phase), which have potentially hazardous properties.
- Assists in the management of temperature-controlled storage and related equipment
- Prepares samples or clinical agents for shipments.
- Supports customer inquiries, discrepancies, inventory maintenance and database updates.
- Uses inventory management systems for data entry, sample tracking, and management of samples.
- Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs), facility safety guidelines, and Food & Drug Administration (FDA) requirements which may include compliance with cGMP CFR parts 210 and 211 where applicable.
- Performs internal specimen consolidation and reorganization projects
- Assists in training of peers, according to SOPs, in the effective use of equipment, methods of storage and retrieval, and systematic data entry.
- Evaluates and finds opportunities for process improvement.
- Assists investigation in support of deviations and complaints
- May be required to travel to other local facilities to meet business needs.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Minimum of 2 years related experience.
- Bachelor’s Degree in a science-related field
- Experience in cold chain repository or shipping/receiving preferred.
- Experience in logistics with a life science company preferred.
- Proven ability to consistently and independently follow policies and procedures, instructions, and to meet schedules required.
- Must be able to operate powered industrial trucks and with the ability to operate the equipment at various heights.
- Need basic computer skills to navigate ERP systems, Outlook and shipping software in order to support the operation in its daily functions.
- Works in a cold environment with exposure to dry ice, liquid nitrogen cryogenics, hazardous and infectious agents, and marked changes in temperature.
- Pushes/pulls 600 lb. liquid nitrogen dewars, and work from a platform ladder.
- Personal protective equipment (lab coats, lab glasses, hand covering and steel toe shoes) will be provided and adherence to safety protocols.
- Lifts and carries up to 50 lbs. and push up to 70 lbs.
- Handles materials frozen on dry ice (-78°C) or liquid nitrogen (-196°C) for up to 6 hours per day.
- Works in walk-in freezers or refrigerators periodically for up to 5 hour per day.
- Uses a computer up to 6 hours per day.
- May be trained to operate a forklift and company-owned vehicle.
