Job Description
Summary/Objective:
The Coding Specialist is responsible for coding records according to the official guidelines and procedures for data retrieval, analysis, and claims processing.
Essential Functions:

  • Assigns ICD and CPT diagnostic and procedural codes appropriately according to policy and official guidelines. Queries physician when code assignments are not straightforward or documentation in the record is inadequate, ambiguous, or unclear for coding purposes.
  • Analyzes discharged patients’ records according to procedures. Looks for appropriate documentation, final diagnosis, dictation, physician orders, test results, and all necessary signatures.
  • Ensures any required reports are attached to appropriate date of service records and flags charts with pending results.
  • Keys claims correctly using the Medical Record Grouper.
  • Notifies billing personnel of any discrepancies.
  • Monitors outpatient and inpatient pending reports.
  • Assists with management of the charge master and revenue cycle management as needed.
  • Reviews emergency room/outpatient records within prescribed timeframe to identify deaths and other reportable conditions.
  • Keeps abreast of coding guidelines and reimbursement reporting requirements.
  • Ensures patient information is safeguarded and kept confidential according to prescribed policies and procedures.
  • Assists with the Release of Information function.
  • Ensures department director is aware of any documentation concerns.
  • Assist department director with day-to-day operation functions as needed.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:
This a full time position. Some flexibility in hours is allowed, but the employee must be available during the “core” work hours of 8:00 am to 4:30 pm and must work 40 hours each week to maintain full time status. Occasional overtime and/or weekend work may be required as job duties demand.
Required Education and Experience:

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • RHIA, RHIT, CPC, CCS or CCS-P certification.
  • One (1) year of experience as a hospital coder.
  • Thorough knowledge of coding diseases and procedures using ICD-CM and CPT code books.
  • Must be efficient with keyboarding.
