Job Description

Job Title: Operator I

Department: Streets

Reports To: Street Foreman

Summary Under the direction of a Foreman or lead person, maintains municipal roads and right of ways in safe condition.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Performs heavy manual labor (i.e., digging holes and ditches with hand tools).

Operates hand and power equipment (i.e., jackhammer).

Dumps, spreads and tamps asphalt with equipment or by hand to patch broken or eroded pavement.

Replaces, preps, pours and finishes concrete.

Trims and cuts trees and bushes in public right of way with an approximate maximum diameter of 18 inches, and no higher than chest high.

Drives light and heavy duty motor vehicles.

Drives snow removal equipment, consisting of a truck.

Operates a paint striper.

Operates equipment (bobcat, sweeper, paint guns, crack sealer, asphalt hot box, etc).

Observes surroundings for items needing repaired and reports to supervisor.

Deals with the public in a tactful and courteous manner.

Other duties as assigned.

Education and/or Experience

High school graduate or GED equivalent. Prefer one to three months related experience and/or training. Good mathematical skills and mechanical aptitude. Ability to read and follow written and verbal English instructions. Must possess a valid Nebraska Commercial Driver’s License within 6 month of hire and maintain for duration of employment.

Knowledge of

Basic concepts of equipment maintenance and repair; use of basic hand and power tools and equipment used in general construction work; and common maintenance safety knowledge. Equipment operation, techniques and methods used in the Street Department.

Ability to

Work in confined spaces; operate hand and power tools; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships; perform heavy manual labor; understand and follow verbal and written instructions; work safely and efficiently; keep and maintain accurate records; work evenings, weekends and holidays. Understand simple blueprints or sketches; troubleshoot equipment malfunctions; and communicate effectively.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include adequate distance vision, color vision, night vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Continuous exposure to

unpleasant elements such as dust, fumes and odors, hazardous materials, dampness, raw sewage, high noise levels, and outside weather conditions.

Other Requirements

Must reside within the South Sioux City School District within 6 months of hire for the duration of employment. May be extended by the City Administrator.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $19.75 - $22.31 per hour
