Basic Purpose and Function:
This skilled manufacturing position is responsible for removing and reinstalling hull and pipe insulation, sheet metal and wood components for repairs to ships and boats in the U.S. Navy, U.S Coast Guard, Military Sealift Command (MSC), and commercial vessels. They must be able to complete and execute the assigned work tasks following regulatory specifications assigned to the vessel.
Skills & Qualifications:
This position will require accessing the ship with the capability to lift up to 50 lbs.
Applicant must be able to:
- Remove and reinstall hull and pipe insulation.
- Remove and reinstall ships hardware and ventilation systems.
- Fabricate and weld sheet metal, preferred.
- Build hazardous environment containments and install negative ventilation.
- Properly handle and dispose of hazardous materials.
- Work at heights and in confined spaces.
- Work non-standard work hours, as required.
Education and Experience:
- Two (2+) years of relevant marine experience preferred.
- Must possess basic math skills.
- Must be able to pass a cross functional test prior to being considered for hire.
- Must be able obtain and/or maintain a passport for travel.
- Should have a working knowledge of the Naval Sea Systems (NAVSEA) Standard Items, specifically 009-32.
- Working knowledge of local NAVSEA Standard Items, specifically Southeast Regional Maintenance Center (SERMC) & Forward Deployed Regional Maintenance Center (FDRMC) Naples and FDRMC Bahrain are a plus.
Major Responsibility (Functions/Duties):
- Up to 50% travel may be required.
- Manages small teams within craft discipline and/or subcontractors.
- Installs parts, such as joiner doors, marine hardware, metal trim, seats, cabinets, and windshields on steel or aluminum ships, using hand tools and portable power tools.
- Locates and marks position of hardware, seats, and other parts according to specifications, using rule, template, and marking device.
- Possesses the ability to set up a weld machine and tack parts together.
- Cuts or grinds mounting bases or brackets, using portable electric saws and grinders, and bolts or screws them in place.
- Drills holes and bolts hardware, joiner doors, and other parts in place, using hand tools.
- Applies caulking compound under spray rails, windshields, and around windows, using caulking gun.
- Saws aluminum trim to specified lengths and cements, crimps, screws, or pounds trim into place, using hacksaw, crimping device, adhesives, screwdriver, and mallet.
- Forms parts by using a Shear, Brake, Roller and Iron Worker. Fabricates duct work using duct forming equipment.
- Will be required to be crossed trained as a Competent Person and fire watch.
- Must understand and follow manufacturers Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and Product Data Sheet (PDS)
- Must understand and follow Lock Out / Tag Out (LOTO) procedures.
- Must understand and follow Work Authorization (WAF) process.
- Must understand and follow all Hot Work procedures.
- Other duties may be assigned.
