Position Summary: Under the supervision of the Sr. Program Director, the Part-Time Program Advocate is responsible for providing crisis intervention, advocacy, and accompaniment services to survivors of sexual assault, including domestic violence or child abuse. The Program Advocate responds to the victim and stays with the victim through either a forensic exam or law enforcement interview. The advocate provides emotional support through one-on-one crisis intervention, resources, referrals, and client follow-ups.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Complete 40 hour in-house Sexual Assault Advocate training.
  • Assist in staffing the 24-hour crisis in-person advocacy services, specifically after business hours, weekend, and occasional holiday coverage.
  • Manage active client/survivor caseload.
  • Provide crisis intervention, follow-up, support services, advocacy, and accompaniment services to victims served through the Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) and other sexual assault victims as identified.
  • Response includes medical, law enforcement, and/or Child Protective Services advocacy and accompaniment as well as developing a plan with each assault survivor to facilitate her/his recovery from the trauma associated with the sexual assault. Support services are also to be provided to the survivor’s significant others.
  • Direct services can, and will, include meeting the sexual assault victim at the Riverside University Health System (RUHS) Medical Center or alternative location to ease access to service, identifying resources, and assisting the survivor to connect with RARCC direct services and/or community resources to support after-care recovery from the assault.
  • Work with first responders (medical personnel, law enforcement, etc.) and other outside agencies in ensuring that survivors receive appropriate services and to provide continuity of services and collaboration among involved agencies.
  • Responsible in developing and maintaining rapport with survivors by completing initial follow-up within 24 hours to assess their need for supportive services, safety planning and service referrals.
  • Responsible for documenting all client service delivery and maintaining accurate and up-to-date client records within agency policy.
  • Responsible in maintaining active communication with Sr. Program Director and Volunteer Coordinator to debrief on all survivor advocacy and accompaniment requests completed and survivor continued support.
  • Attend agency and team meetings.
  • Adhere to agency policies and procedures including confidentiality, child abuse reporting, and code of ethics.
  • Additional tasks, projects and or responsibilities as assigned by Sr. Program Director not outlined but which are an important part of the agency’s goals and/or program outcomes.

Qualifications and Education Requirements:

  • At least 21 years of age
  • Highschool graduate or equivalent
  • Associate degree in Human Services related field strongly preferred
  • Must be available to work weekends and evenings
  • Able to obtain clearance with the California Department of Justice
  • Must have a valid California driver’s license, insurance, and working vehicle
  • Must be a Riverside County resident or live within 45 minutes of RUHS

Preferred Skills

  • Knowledge and understanding of crisis intervention services to victims of crimes, preferably to victims of sexual assault.
  • Experience in delivery of crisis intervention, advocacy, and accompaniment services to victims of sexual assault both children and adults.
  • Knowledge of sexual assault-related issues and intervention techniques, ability to provide services in accordance with Rape Crisis Center philosophy and ability to work within a team approach both inter- and intra- agency.
  • Knowledge of the criminal justice system including law enforcement and court-related issues related to sexual assault.
  • Ability to work effectively under conditions of limited supervision, high stress and rapidly changing situations and circumstances.
  • Effective communication skills include writing, public speaking, active listening skills, and conflict resolution/mediation skills.
  • Demonstrated ability and sensitivity to diversity issues involved in working in a multicultural community.
  • Bilingual Spanish preferred
