Overview:

The Brooklyn Public Library Adult Learning Program is seeking Program Assistant to assist WIOA program participants earn their HSE diploma through one of the five pathways (TASC, Regents, NEDP, etc.) or improve their English speaking skills while earning a certification. In addition, support learners with any intructional barriers in/outside of the classroom during Office Hours, provide consistent and responsive feedback and support to classroom instructors at one of BPL’s Adult Learning Center or community branches. The Program Assistant, under the guidance of the Adult Learning Advisor, monitors and supports participant’s progress and work collaboratively with instructional staff to ensure program quality and goals are being met.

Responsibilities:
  • Engage students in a learning community ands provide support to learners in/outside of the classroom; collaborate with instructors and students to support and enhance lesson plans with a focus on developing reading and writing skills, English language literacy skills, technology, and workplace literacy skills
  • Working with instructors and Advisors to support needs of participants in order to reach their goal of obtaining their HSE diploma, improve their English speaking skills, and/or earn a certification
  • Assist with student assessment duties, student self-assessment rubrics, checklists and portfolios
  • Record-keeping & data entry of student attendance and documentation of student progress as required
  • Assist participants with applying for exams and tech support
  • Assist with day to day duties such as Information Sessions, registration, retention, orientation, assessments, and follow-ups
  • Participate in staff development initiatives
Qualifications:
  • Minimum of High School Diploma and/or Equivalent required
  • Strong knowledge of ABE, HSE, ESOL, and tech skills to support students and instructors, computer software applications, including Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel)
  • Experience working in an adult education learning environment
  • Strong motivation to keep up to date on new technologies
  • Knowledge of instructional software utilized with Smartboards and ipads; online technology such as listservs, wikis, blogs, and online learning, a plus
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Bilingual (Spanish) language skills preferred.
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, team environment
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Must be able to work varied schedule, including evenings and Saturdays to meet the needs of the participants

This is a part-time grant funded position. Hours for this position are up to 19 hours per week at $17 per hour.

Tentative schedule for the position is: Mornings (M/W/F) 10-3, Evenings (T/TH) 3-8, and some Saturdays 10-2. However, please note that schedule is subject to change based the department needs.
