Job description
OverviewHello performers, playwrights, and directors. Do you love kids? Are you excited by the idea of helping kids express themselves and explore their world through the writing and performance of brand new plays? Writopia Lab, an award-winning 501(c)3 nonprofit that runs writing workshops for kids ages 7 to 18, is looking for Performance Instructors for its Playwriting and Performance workshops this summer for our New York City locations.
Since its formation in New York City in 2007, Writopia Lab has grown into a nationwide community of young writers. Our mission is to foster joy, literacy, and critical thinking in children and teens from all backgrounds through creative writing. We create a safe and engaging space for writers at all stages of the writing process, and we aim to provide the creative inspiration, individual attention, and intellectual environment that may not be available to them at school.
What Performance Instructors Do
The Playwriting and Performance camp is a week-long day camp that we run through the summer. In the morning, writers ages 7 to 18 work in aged-based groups with a professional playwright trained in our educational approach to write their very own short plays. During the afternoons (this is where you come in), they work with a theater professional to bring those plays to life, casting themselves and each other in their original plays and then directing, and acting in those plays. Additionally, they explore aspects of performance through improv and speech, as well as design through small tutorials in sound, set, and costume design. The week is process-oriented and relies heavily on a deep sense of play. It culminates in a final informal reading and presentation of their work.
Requirements
We are in need of instructors who find it easy to be supportive and enthusiastic about the work of young writers and who are thoughtful and instructors. Completed B.A.; M.A. and/or theater production experience preferred, and previous experience teaching children theater is required. Must be fully vaccinated.
Details, Locations, and Hours
We are specifically looking for Performance Instructors who can commit to afternoons from Monday to Friday the weeks of June 27th, July 11th, and July 25th, with the flexibility to work in-person at either our Upper West Side location in Manhattan or our Park Slope location in Brooklyn.
Workshops will be in-person with the possibility of supporting online workshops as needs arise.
How to Apply
If you are excited by the idea of joining a community of writers and helping children and teens learn to strengthen their writing and performance skills, please apply! (Don't forget to attach your resume, cover letter, and answer the question “Why do you want to work at Writopia?”)
