TITLE
: Personal Protection Order Specialist

REPORTS TO: Director of Legal Advocacy

CLASSIFICATION: Part Time, Non-Exempt. 24 Hours per week.

ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW:

Turning Point, Inc in Mount Clemens, MI is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization qualified employer for Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF). Turning Point, Inc empowers domestic and sexual violence survivors through comprehensive services and resources while advocating for community action to end oppression and violence. We offer emergency shelter, housing, trauma advocacy services, forensic nurse examiner program & first response advocacy services, 24-hour hotline, personal protection order and legal advocacy services, and community outreach.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Responsible for providing crisis intervention, support, advocacy and referrals; ensuring office coverage; as well as offering direct assistance on filing motions and personal protection orders. Work collaboratively with the county clerk's office, court staff, Turning Point’s PPO Coordinator, and the Director of Legal Advocacy. Maintain and organize documentation and data generated from the Personal Protection Order Office.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Implement agency and program mission and empowerment philosophy.

2. Administer and implement agency policies and procedures.

3. Maintain agency policy on confidentiality, record keeping and professional ethics.

4. PPO Specialist is responsible for providing office coverage and for assisting anyone coming to the PPO Office that needs to file a personal protection order and related motions.

5. PPO Specialist will review with the person all documents or material pertaining to filing personal protection orders to ensure its appropriateness and accuracy before filing.

6. PPO Specialist will provide advocacy, crisis intervention and make appropriate referrals when needed. Specialist will also inform persons when necessary about domestic violence and sexual assault laws, criminal and district court procedures, or other services in the community that may assist them.

7. PPO Specialist will be responsible for documenting all activity and service provided in the PPO Office and reporting collected data to the PPO Coordinator monthly.

8. PPO Specialist will keep current on resources available in the community, changes in domestic violence and sexual assault laws, as well as criminal and district court procedures.

9. Notify the PPO Coordinator, Director of Legal Advocacy, Chief Program Officer, CEO or County Clerk of any emergency situations that may affect Turning Point staff and clients.

10. Assist with training for PPO volunteers and interns.

11. Participate in applicable staff trainings and workshops.

14. Attend all departmental and agency staff meetings, and other meetings deemed necessary by Turning Point.

15. Conduct relationships with colleagues to promote mutual respect, improvement of services and interdepartmental program development.

16. Perform all other duties as assigned by Director of Legal Advocacy.

Requirements:

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must possess a bachelor's degree in social work, criminal justice or related human service field.
  • At least 1 year of relevant experience in the domestic/sexual violence field is preferred.
  • Ability to work independently in an unpredictable and spontaneous environment is essential.
  • Excellent communication skills and demonstrated abilities to work closely with others towards a common goal.
  • Must have the ability to work with diverse populations.
  • Computer skills preferred.
  • This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
  • Must have reliable transportation, insurance, a valid Michigan Driver’s License and a good driving record.
  • Must pass a criminal background check as a condition of employment.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Must be able to work independently and multi-task in a fast-paced office environment.
  • Allow for flexibility in schedule, work location and job function.
  • Ability to lift 20lbs.
  • Ability to operate general office equipment.

SALARY:

Compensation is paid at an hourly rate starting at $20.00 and is commensurate with qualifications. Paid and unpaid time off is available for employees to promote wellness and self-care.
