Position Overview:
The Program Educator supports various educational and advocacy initiatives in and around Tompkins County. Program Educators support the mission of the Village, to advocate for educational equity and excellence for all students, particularly Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino/Latinx, low income, and any other underserved students within Tompkins County, through strategic community relationships, assessment of the local district’s practices and policies, and responsive programs and services.
About the Village at Ithaca:
The Village at Ithaca was founded in 2002 and has been advocating for youth ever since. Our mission is to advocate for educational equity and excellence for all students, particularly Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino/Latinx, low income, and any other underserved students within Tompkins County, through strategic community relationships, assessment of the local district’s practices and policies, and responsive programs and services. To that end, we address both immediate and basic needs on the individual level, as well as the structural faults in various legal, educational, and other social systems.
Projected Start Date: ASAP
Responsibilities:
- Serve as a staff lead for Village educational programming providing direct educational and socioemotional support to students
- Supervise and train program assistants for work in academic programming
- Maintain positive relationships with school district staff and community agencies
- Document and maintain program reports and other records
- Serve as a family advocate as needed
- Other duties as assigned
Mandatory Qualifications:
- A working knowledge of systemic racism, white supremacy, harm reduction,and trauma-informed practices
- Valid NYS Driver’s License
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working with marginalized and disenfranchised youth including BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ as well as homeless youth
Hours:
We are open to hiring either a part-time or full-time employee to fill this position.
