Job description
Canterbury School seeks an experienced and empathetic health professional to serve as a full time Monday- Friday with possibility of evening/on-call hours. This position reports to the Director of Nursing and works in close collaboration with the full-time and other per diem nursing staff, Counseling Center, and Medical Director (as needed).
Hours: Full-time, Monday - Friday, ranging from 7:30am- 5pm, with possible on-call overnight.
Responsibilities:
- Provides nursing care to students in the Health Center according to standing orders and utilizing the nursing process for both acute and chronic conditions.
- Performs health assessments and screenings for walk-in patients; independently triages patients by acuity.
- Works collaboratively with the Director of Nursing, Medical Director, Director of Counseling, and Athletic Trainer to coordinate care plans for students.
- Observes and evaluates patient response to nursing care using clinical judgment and seeks assistance when a patient is not responding well to treatment.
- Follows Health Center policy and procedure guidelines for admitting and discharging students to and from the infirmary.
- Assists Medical Director during office visits.
- Properly maintains medical records and documents.
- Collaborates with outside providers and consultants to coordinate patient care, including scheduling appointments and drivers as needed.
- Communicates with parents and school staff regarding student care plans as required and appropriate.
- Maintains confidentiality regarding the health information of students.
- Works with the Director of Nursing to promote campus-wide health and wellness initiatives.
- Administers prescribed medications and vaccinations to students.
- Maintains accurate daily count and records pertaining to controlled substances.
- Provides bedside care, including light meal preparation.
- Updates documentation using electronic medical records.
- Assists with linens and bedding changes between patients.
- Performs administrative duties including, but not limited to: attendance, clearance letters, formal notes, charges to student accounts, faxing, calling in medications, scanning documents, etc.
- Assists with the coordination of school-sponsored trips, including class retreats, international travel, and InterMission initiatives.
- Assists the Director of Nursing and Medical Director with the ongoing development and review of policies and procedures.
- Attends meetings as required.
Qualifications:
- Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Connecticut. Out-of-state licensure will be considered, contingent on the applicant's ability to obtain a Connecticut RN license.
- Minimum of three years of nursing experience, preferably in a school setting, emergency department, or urgent care setting.
- Proficiency with technology, including, but not limited to, use of: electronic medical records, Google Suite applications, Excel, email communication.
- Demonstrated commitment to serving a diverse student body and collaborating with a community that highly values equity and inclusion.
- Eagerness to participate in ongoing professional development, especially as it relates to school health topics and issues of concern for adolescent girls.
- Models appropriate behavior and a positive, resilient attitude for students.
