The University of Virginia, Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, is seeking applicants for a Research Specialist position at the Center for Applied Biomechanics. General duties will include performing and helping to manage complex experimental projects, the design and oversight of the fabrication of mechanical test fixtures that interface with our material test devices, summarizing data results from an experimental test series in project reports, performing in-depth literature reviews on given topics, and summarize the results in written narratives suitable for inclusion in a paper or report. Managing complex experimental projects including designing, conducting, analyzing, and reporting on results.

The Research Specialist will assist in the development of new research projects and will work alongside graduate research assistants, and technical staff on project-specific tasks. Responsibilities will include managing project tasks related to injury biomechanics experimental research. The candidate will have an active role in the design and execution of experiments involving cadaveric materials. Duties will include direct involvement in project planning and execution, data collection, data analysis, academic publishing in peer-reviewed conferences and journals, and collaboration with academic, industrial, and government research partners.

Required qualifications include:

• High school diploma or equivalent with four years of experience is required.

• A B.S or M.S. in Mechanical or Biomedical Engineering, with emphasis in biomechanics, orthopaedics, or closely related field.

• Proficient in the design of test fixtures, with a strong understanding of machine design and machining techniques and should possess experience in the operation and functionality of data acquisition systems.

• Hands-on experience in a laboratory environment.

• Proficiency in scientific programming languages (e.g., Matlab).

• Experience with mechanical design, including proficiency with computer aided design (CAD) software.

• A working knowledge of human anatomy and biology.

• Excellent oral and written communication skills, critical thinking, and the ability to work well as a member of a team.
