SUMMARY

This position processes, organizes and shelves library materials at all Public Library locations.

ALLOCATED HOURS: 20, Part-Time

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Performs tasks associated with the automated materials handling system, such as emptying bins, fine sorting carts, and providing basic troubleshooting.
  • Shelves library materials alphanumerically according to the Dewey decimal classification.
  • Maintains shelves by keeping materials in neat and correct order. Cleans and sanitizes materials as needed. Directs damaged materials to proper repair location.
  • Assists staff and the public with locations of materials.
  • Assists public with general information and direction.
  • Assists with special events as assigned.
  • Tutors patrons in the use of the PAC terminals.
  • Attends regularly scheduled departmental and all-staff meetings, annual staff training day, and any additional mandatory meetings.
  • Other related work and special projects as assigned.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or GED; any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job is acceptable.

SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Possesses general knowledge of policies, procedures, and activities of the library and library practices as they pertain to the performance of duties relating to the job of Shelver.
  • Possesses general knowledge of customer service practices as necessary in the completion of daily responsibilities.
  • Effectively communicates and interacts with supervisors, members of the general public, and all other groups involved in the activities of the department.
  • Possesses excellent organizational, human relations, and technical skills.
  • Exercises independent judgment and works with little direct supervision.
  • Ability to quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and /or technology.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

While performing the duties of this job, the incumbent is regularly required to sit and talk or hear. The incumbent frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms. The incumbent is occasionally required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl and climb or balance. The incumbent must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Must be able to push and pull carts weighing 60 to 80 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and ability to adjust focus.
