Project/Unit Description
The Test Engineering Division (TEN) of the Electronic Systems Laboratory (ELSYS) develops Hardware in the Loop (HITL) test sets, test tools, analysis tools and test methods for US Air Force, Army, Navy sponsors. These systems provide high fidelity simulation and stimulation of real-time Electro-Optical/Infra-Red (EO/ IR), Radio Frequency (RF) and Avionics environments for testing EW and Avionics systems. These systems protect aircraft from adversarial ground and airborne threats. This research is critical for supporting the development, trouble-shooting, analysis and testing of Electronic Warfare (EW) and Integrated EW (IEW) systems.
Job Purpose
The Software Engineer designs, develops, and tests software. Additionally, the Software Engineer manages software development teams, provides technical leadership, and establishes software development lifecycle practices and processes. The Software Engineer is proficient in programming languages such as Java, C, C++, Ruby, Python, Scala, and Groovy. In this role, the Software Engineer requires extensive knowledge of programming languages, software development, computer operating systems, Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery (CI/CD), DevOps, Application Programming Interface (API) development, container development, and distributed systems. The Software Engineer also applies engineering principles to software creation, manages production releases of software, performs code reviews, merges feature development branches, and analyzes and triages issues. Necessary skill areas for the Software Engineer include programming and coding, fundamentals of computer science, software design and architecture development, algorithms and data structures, information analysis, software debugging and testing, and working in development teams. The Software Engineer also works with sponsors to curate requirements, define sprint work items, set priorities for work backlogs, and organize development teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform software development, debugging, modification, enhancement, and documentation.
- Develop and maintain kernel and user-level software and scripts.
- Contribute to research reports, presentations, white papers, and competitive proposals.
Additional Responsibilities
- Support translation of system requirements into software requirements and design.
- Collaborate with other team members including other software and hardware developers, test engineers, system engineers, etc.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Minimum Qualifications
- Experience with one or more of the following: C# (WinForms, WPF), C++, Java or Python
- Experience with software version control tools and best practices (e.g. Git)
- Experience developing on/for Windows and Linux Operating systems
Preferred Qualifications
- Active Secret Clearance.
- Experience with any lab framework (e.g. Angular, React, Vue.js, Ember, Django, Ruby, Spring).
- Experience with software development and collaboration tools such as GitLab and Atlassian.
- Experience with of EW and Avionics Systems architecture, function and interface.
- Relevant interfaces, including MIL-STD-1553, Ethernet, serial, discrete and analog interfaces.
