Furst-McNess Company has an immediate opening for a Staff Accountant. The ideal candidate will be responsible for timely and accurate preparation of financial accounting data in a variety of areas. It is essential that this candidate brings analytical and organizational skills in order to best support the accounting team. The position will also have contact with both internal and external contacts that requires strong interpersonal communication skills, both written and verbal. This position addresses tight deadlines and a multitude of accounting activities including general ledger preparation, financial reporting, year-end audit preparation and payroll.
Responsibilities:
- Obtain and maintain a thorough understanding of the financial reporting and general ledger structure.
- Ensure an accurate and timely monthly and year-end close.
- Ensure the timely and accurate reporting of all monthly and year-end financial information. Responsible for financial consolidations.
- Responsible for the timely and accurate processing of payroll.
- Responsible to ensure that sale tax returns are completed in an accurate and timely manner.
- Responsible to ensure that all GST/HST tax returns are completed in an accurate and timely manner.
- Responsible for timely and accurate bank reconciliations.
- Responsible for the maintenance and reconciliation of the fixed asset system, including the reconciliation of depreciation expense for all areas. Also responsible for tracking and maintaining work-in-process.
- Work with the Controller to ensure a clean and timely year-end audit.
- Work with the Controller to ensure clean and timely bank audits.
- Assist the Controller in the daily banking requirements.
- Support budget and forecasting activities.
- Monitor and analyze department work to develop more efficient procedures and use of resources while maintaining a high level of accuracy.
- Advise staff regarding the handling of non-routine reporting transactions.
- Respond to inquiries from the CFO, Controller, and other managers regarding financial results and/or special reporting requests.
- Assist in maintaining the strategic goal relating to DPO (Days Payable Outstanding).
- Assist in development and implementation of new procedures and features to enhance the workflow of the department.
- Work with each direct report to establish goals and objectives for each year and monitor progress to enhance the professional development of staff.
- Participate in various projects as assigned.
- Perform other work related duties as requested or required.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Be able to succeed within the culture of the Furst-McNess Company.
- Ability to perform essential job functions with or without accommodation.
- A bachelor’s degree in Accounting or equivalent in related work experience, CPA preferable.
- Five to seven years of accounting and financial analysis related experience.
- Working knowledge of computers and Microsoft Office products.
- Ability to read, write and speak English.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, and is capable of utilizing these skills within all levels of the Company as well as externally.
- Strong interpersonal and supervisory skills.
- Ability to provide outstanding customer service to all associates and management staff, showing a sense of urgency relative to solving problems, performing assigned tasks, employee concerns, etc.
- Ability to multi-task, work under pressure and meet deadlines required.
- Ability to handle information of a confidential nature.
- Ability to show a high level of attention to detail.
- Ability to think analytically.
- Ability to effectively organize work schedules and manage multiple assignments by utilizing time management skills to ensure day-to-day assignments and special projects are completed within guidelines agreed upon.
