Reports To: Dollar Store Worker Organizer
Salary: $750 per week

Mission:
Step Up Louisiana’s mission is to build political power to win education and economic justice for all. We do this by “stepping up” to take action for real change and holding the people in charge accountable.
Purpose:
The purpose of the Organizer In Training (OIT) program is to take people with a passion for justice and a willingness to get out there and talk to people to learn how to Organize, the Step Up Louisiana way. OITs will develop their skills and knowledge of how to engage people directly in changing their own lives for the better. Graduates will receive a certificate.
OITs will receive training, education, coaching, and mentoring. They will spend their days in the community talking with low-wage workers and bringing the workers together to take action. By the end of the program, OITs will support Step Up's meetings, demonstrations, and other activities.
Program Description:
10 weeks - January 9 to March 17, 2023.
Starts with 10 days of classroom and field training
Assigned to an experienced Mentor and Team
Work with teams in New Orleans neighborhoods going door to door and visiting stores
Additional training days throughout
8-hour days, including breaks
March 17th Certificates
What OITs will learn:
- The history and current context in the U.S., Louisiana, and New Orleans. Some people are in poverty and distress, while others have great wealth and privilege.
- How to listen and engage people to find out about their lives, their needs, and what they care most about.
- How to build hope and influence people to shift how they see their choices and possibilities;
- How to connect people with each other so that they feel less isolated and more powerful;
- How to be organized and focused while managing multiple tasks;
- The importance of the OIT as part of a larger program and plan that leads to long-term change.
- How to work in a team to support each other to achieve common goals
Requirements for Graduation
- Consistent and dependable attendance and participation
- Behavior consistent with Step Up Louisiana Values and Norms
- Initial self-assessment and self-development goals
- Mid-term self-assessment and feedback, with goals
- End of program self-assessment and feedback.
You will be amazed at the progress you make and how much you learn and grow over 8 weeks! It will fly by and you will make friends who last a lifetime and have experiences you will never forget.
OIT Commitment:
- To have a valid Driver’s License, a working vehicle, and car insurance. This personal vehicle must be available for work use.
- To arrive at all scheduled workdays, training, and meetings on time and maintain consistent attendance.
- To notify the designated person of any inability to be on time or attend as soon as it is known.
- Be prepared for and attend regular meetings with your Mentor.
- To co-develop and follow a written schedule, with goals;
- To represent Step Up Louisiana in the community in a positive light, and to embody positive characteristics as a representative of Step Up Louisiana.
- To communicate your needs directly to your Mentor.
Compensation and Hours:
- OITs will be compensated $750 per week, paid biweekly via direct deposit on Fridays
- Daily gas allowance included in weekly $750 stipend
- 16 hours of paid sick leave if needed.
- Regular hours are 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, including evenings and occasional weekends as needed
