Stormwater Scientist/Engineer - Seattle, WA
Job description
Aspect Consulting, LLC (Aspect), an earth and water resources consulting firm, is seeking a Water Resources Scientist or Engineer to join our Stormwater Practice. This position includes a focus on fieldwork supporting our stormwater and surface water monitoring and site inspection projects.
Ponds, lakes, rivers, reservoirs, streams, biofiltration facilities, and stormwater pipes—responsible management of these resources requires high quality monitoring data. Aspect’s Stormwater Practice is known for providing sophisticated water quality and hydrologic monitoring capabilities that serve as the foundation for making informed, critical decisions. Our work includes:
- NPDES permit support for multiple jurisdictions
- Stream gaging and flow monitoring in the streams and rivers across the Northwest
- Monitoring performance of stormwater best management practices (BMPs)
- Operating automated sampling and telemetry equipment
- Collecting water level measurements to monitor changes in groundwater flow.
- Inspecting sites for proper BMP usage and identifying pollutant-generating activities

Your initial responsibilities will include:
- Conducting field activities at sites across Washington State, with an emphasis in the Puget Sound region: water quality sampling; flow measurements in a wide variety of water bodies, especially pipes and streams; installing and maintaining monitoring equipment; site inspections; BMP assessments; sediment and solids sampling; and environmental sampling.
- Field reporting to project managers including field notes, chain of custody (COC) forms, photographs, and collected data.
- Managing and summarizing data collected using Microsoft Office products, particularly Excel and Word.
- Planning, preparing for, and conducting field data collection efforts with appropriate guidance. This will often involve independent effort and self-management of time.
- Focusing on client goals in completing projects.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in stormwater- or water-quality-related environmental sciences (e.g., hydrology) or civil or environmental engineering; high school diploma with commensurate experience may substitute.
- Ability to comprehend sampling plans and construction documents.
- Ability to work outside with variable hours in inclement weather conditions, including safely entering rivers, streams, and confined spaces (e.g., storm drainage structures).
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to complete (as a part of your work at Aspect):
- Confined Space Entry safety training
- Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) training
- Adult First Aid and CPR training
- Valid state driver’s license.
- Ability to travel to local sites using shared Aspect vehicles or personal vehicle; occasional overnight travel may be required
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience performing environmental fieldwork, sample collection for water and sediment, data management, and instrumentation calibration and programming
- Experience using asset management software, databases, data visualization and analysis programs (e.g., Tableau), and basic data graphing and summary methods
- Experience performing site assessments and inspections for stormwater source control, pollution prevention, and illicit discharges
Workplace Setting
- Often on site performing fieldwork throughout western Washington. As part of fieldwork, will need to be able to access our field Annex building, currently in the Mount Baker neighborhood of Seattle.
