Collaborating with their food bank co-workers as well as key community partners, in this role, our member will support the needs of our in person food pantry. Members will assist in planning, coordination and operation of the daily pantry. In an operation that highly leverages volunteers, our AmeriCorps member will provide important stability and consistency for food bank staff. They will keep the food flowing; from receiving donations and orders through to sorting and restocking our shelves, our AmeriCorps member will build the personal skills and connections that ensure culturally familiar food options are available for all our customers. They will assist with volunteer on-boarding, training, and oversight, daily pantry operations (food ordering, set-up, customer intake, cleanup), data reporting, and program evaluation. Importantly, their experiences and assessments will help inform organizational planning efforts led by the food bank's leadership.
Our work is aligned with the belief that all our neighbors can meet their basic needs in a dignified and respectful manner. While the majority of our work is about promoting healthy food access, we also know that food itself is insufficient; the average income of our customer families is less than $2000 per month. We work to help our customer families build stability in their lives in ways that reduce or eliminate their need for a food bank. Our primary services include a grocery store styled food pantry open four days a week, off site pantries at a community college and apartment building, a home delivery service for customers unable to access our in person pantry, and a backpack program at 15 nearby schools to ensure that school aged kids remain well-nourished on weekends when school meals are unavailable. We also operate a rooftop farm where we grow vegetables for our pantry and provide youth focused gardening education. Finally, our on site social worker connects our customers to resources which promote economic, housing, and family stability. Our AmeriCorps members bring critical stability and capacity to our work. They will support our walk-in pantry which has reopened to full in person shopping. They will lead our home delivery program to create a consistent point of contact for customers and volunteers, and develop expertise to allow these programs to develop further in their reach and effectiveness. And, they will lead weekly pantries that we operate off site to ensure that those unable to easily access our primary walk-in food bank still have reliable access to healthy food.
