Utility Service Worker I
Water Distribution

JOB SUMMARY
This position is responsible for assisting in the construction, repair and maintenance of the water distribution system. An incumbent in this position may be designated "Utility Service Worker II."

MAJOR DUTIES

• Prepares necessary materials, equipment and supplies to perform daily assignments.
• Performs work in compliance with safety policies and procedures.
• Assists in the maintenance of assigned vehicles and equipment; assists in maintaining truck inventory.
• Operates a variety of tools and equipment as needed
• Operates a truck to transport tools, equipment, supplies and personnel to and from work sites.
• Participates in excavation and site repair duties.
• Assists in the installation of a variety of mains and other system components.
• Repairs meter and water line leaks.
• Replaces or repairs fire hydrants.
• Makes new service taps for customers and fire hydrants.
• Responds to after-hours emergencies when on-call.
• Provides supports to other divisions and to contractors as assigned.
• Flags traffic at work sites.
• Performs related duties.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

• Knowledge of water distribution system operation and maintenance principles.
• Knowledge of the hazards inherent to water distribution system maintenance work and the safety measures used to mitigate those hazards.
• Knowledge of the operation, maintenance and repair of a variety of job-related tools and equipment.
• Skill in the problem solving.
• Skill in the operation of job-related tools and equipment
• Skill in flagging traffic.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

• The work consists of related maintenance duties. Inclement weather and field conditions contribute to the complexity of the position.
• The purpose of this position is to participate in the repair of the water distribution system. Successful performance contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of system operations.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

• The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, bending or crouching. The employee frequently lifts light and occasionally heavy objects, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.
• The work is typically performed outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, or irritating chemicals. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
• Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
• Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
• Possession of or ability to readily obtain an appropriate state-certified license for water distribution.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $16.28 - $18.32 per hour
