Volunteers for Vashon Island Fire and Rescue are first responders which are dispatched to emergency BLS/ALS calls. Volunteers are required to commit to serving three 12 hour shifts a month, for 18 months following completion of an Academy as well as maintain minimum training requirements.


EMT- Emergency Medical Technicians. Volunteers who live on Vashon Island can be sponsored into King Country’s EMT program after the application process, with a. You must have a Healthcare Provider CPR certification and proof of current vaccinations before starting the program. The KC EMT program typically 14 weeks, on Wednesday evenings and most of the day Saturdays. Previously, the location has been in Kent at 20811 84th Ave S, Kent, WA 98032. However, the location is subject to change without notice. This class is hosted every spring and fall and space is limited. A first-aid class is highly recommended, to help prepare for the Pretest. Volunteers who do not live on Vashon Island are required to complete an EMT class and passed the NREMT test within the last year from the date of application.


Once an EMT certificate has been earned everyone must complete an in-house VIFR EMT Academy (sample calendar). The Academy is milestone-based testing for competence and confidence in working with Patients. Volunteers from off-island for both EMT or Firefighter positions must acquire and EMT certification before being accepted to our in-house EMT Academy or our Fire Academy. The EMT Academy is limited to 6 volunteers per session. For the VIFR EMT Academy, EMT's are assigned to a shift to train with staff, and training typically lasts 3-4 months but varies. Recruits will train at Station 55 from 07:30-19:30 every 6th day until completing your milestones. Agreement for EMT's.


After successfully completing the EMT Academy volunteers can self-schedule their three 12 hour shifts per month online. On-island residents may respond from home once given clearance.


Firefighters- Volunteers interested can attend our in-house IFSAC Firefighter One, after successfully passing a CPAT. Our six month on-island Academy has two evening weeknight classes for book work and lectures, then all day Saturday for practicals on the drill court (See 20-01 Calendar). There are some Sunday classes as well for special training. When finished successfully, you will earn a Washington State Firefighter One Certificate. Those who wish to complete the fire academy must sign a service contract. Agreement for Volunteer Firefighters. Off-Island, Volunteers must have an EMT certification and should complete our in-house EMT Academy prior to attending our Firefighter One Academy.
