The Center for Radical Innovation for Social Change (RISC) at the University of Chicago is looking to hire a unique group of Analysts with different skills and backgrounds to work with us on tackling the world’s biggest problems. Analysts will be responsible for researching the root causes of various social issues, proposing tangible and creative solutions, and piloting those solutions, collaborating with outside partners as appropriate. Analysts will join our team in January or August 2023.

RISC is:

  • A nonprofit founded by Prof. Steve Levitt, author of the Freakonomics series
  • A place that combines unconventional perspectives and empirical data to explore potentially paradigm-breaking ideas (think of us as Freakonomics, applied)
  • A cross between an incubator and a consultancy, with the feel of a startup and mission of a nonprofit
  • A flat, 10-person team that works together closely across a wide variety of issue areas
  • A hybrid workplace with office located in Chicago’s Hyde Park neighborhood

RISC is not:

  • A political advocacy group or a DC-style think tank – we engage with partners across the private and public sectors, but we do not focus on passing legislation or implementing regulations
  • An academic or predoctoral group – while we may conduct pilots, our main focus is on translating ideas into action, not publishing papers
  • A traditional nonprofit – we’re driven by results, not public relations, and run toward risk, not away from it
  • Oriented toward one particular ideology or vision of “social good” – we value diversity of thought and answer tough questions by analyzing empirical data and engaging in teamwide debate
