About the job
The primary purpose of this role will be to lead and supervise the Analytical Chemistry Operations and method development for Alcoa’s Breakthrough Technology team.
Major Activities:

Ensures safe and reliable operations of analytical laboratory and instrumentation to meet Alcoa environmental and safety, and health standards to conduct material analyses

Lead, develop, train, and manage a team of (3-5) direct reports to support analysis of materials in partnership with Breakthrough Technology team

Applies standard processes for laboratory instrument quality control and assurance, recommends service and maintenance practices, and develops specifications for analytical equipment

Applies detailed knowledge of analytical chemistry to develop new analysis methods

Implements chemical analysis characterization methods for materials

Solves problems to root cause, seeks and finds opportunities for improvements

Implements solutions required to improve materials and production processes

Meet with technical teams to assess progress relative to project plans, evaluate critical paths, and update plans to meet project goals

Fosters collaborative relationships within and between work groups, including external workgroups and stakeholders

Provides functional mentorship and training to technicians and other engineers/scientists

Diligently communicates progress and results through written technical reports, presentations, patents, and publications
Essential Skills/Experience:
-
Demonstrated ability to work and lead optimally in a team environment, supporting multiple internal customers
-
Knowledge and experience in analytical chemistry including and sample preparation, instrument operation, and quality control procedures
-
Hands-on expertise in X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and inductively coupled plasma (ICP) spectroscopy techniques.

Expertise in thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and differential thermal analysis (DTA) techniques preferred but not required

Solid understanding of LECO methods for oxygen, nitrogen, carbon, sulfur analyses

Knowledge of SEM, EDS, OIM

Solid understanding of laser diffraction particle size analysis, BET surface area, and zeta-potential measurement methods

Strong interpersonal and communication skills
Qualifications:

Minimum 4-year degree in chemistry or related science, M.S. degree preferred

Minimum 8 years of work experience in analytical chemistry
-
Previous experience in aluminum industry preferred
