Job Title: Archaeological Technician

General Description:

Will assist the Archaeologist in actively seeking to identify, document, preserve, protect and interpret Chickasaw culture, history, sacred sites and collections of objects and information for the Chickasaw people. This individual is also responsible assisting in the preservation and cataloging of archaeological collections under the supervision of the Archaeologist.

Supervision Received: Work is performed under the supervision of the Archaeologist

Supervision Exercised: Volunteers as assigned

Supervision Essential Job Functions:

  • Assists with pedestrian survey, testing, monitoring and data recovery in the field.
  • Assist the Archaeologist in conducting archaeological and historical site record searches.
  • Performs archival research as needed.
  • Assists Archaeologist in processing, documenting, and accessioning collections according to the Culture and Humanities accessioning process.
  • Assists in documenting donations of Chickasaw archaeological collections.
  • Assists with care and protection of any cultural, archaeological or botanical on-site resources.
  • May be required to participate in necessary visits to federal agencies, repositories and museums as they arise
  • Assists other staff with cultural and natural restoration projects on historic sites.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Preferred - Ability to develop working knowledge of the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), National Environmental Protection Act (NEPA), Archaeological Resources Protection Act (ARPA) and related Tribal, Federal and state laws, regulations, and executive orders and participates in job-related training.

Education:

Bachelors Required - in Anthropology, Archaeology, History or a closely related field.

Training And Experience:

Preferred Training (0 - 6 months) - Has completed an archaeological field school.

Licenses, Certifications, Other:

Required - Valid driver's license

Physical Requirements:

Preferred - Must be able to lift over 50lbs, hike steep terrains and work in outdoor environment on a daily basis.
