Volunteers of America’s Stationary Security Personnel recognize the need for our clients to feel secure in their transition to housing and understand the time it takes to adjust to the walls, doors, and ceiling after experiencing homelessness.

You will have the opportunity to work directly with our program participants at Hope House West: Residential & Shelter and have a direct impact on the positive outcome of their lives – the most rewarding part of working at Volunteers of America! As part of the Security Team you will help to create a stable, respectful foundation for our tenants to stand on by:

  • Helping to promote hope and change to keep all Volunteers of America tenants safe.
  • Provide support, safety and security for residents, shelter guests and staff at Hope House West.
  • Provide crowd control for Hope House West.
  • Conduct interior and exterior walks throughout your shift and review cameras.
  • Observe and report any suspicious, illegal and/or criminal activity.
  • Observe and report all lease and/or program agreement violations.
  • Document events throughout each shift; complete the nightly shift report and other required forms (Incident Reports, Proof of Service, etc.); share information with all necessary parties through email by the end of each shift.
  • Help to identify clients who may require additional support/services to maintain their housing and communicate these needs to their case manager.
  • Deliver/Post legal documents; explain the documents to those we serve; complete and turn in Proof of Service forms in a timely manner.
  • Participate in regular Security Team Meetings, Coaching/Supervision and other required Program and VOA Agency meetings and trainings.
  • Work well with a team, as well as individually, when needed.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work:

  • Full Time (30-40 work hours throughout the week)
  • Friday-Monday 9am-7pm

Requirements:
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Minimum of two (2) years of Security work experience and/or related experience working with individuals in crisis who are low-income, homeless, at-risk and vulnerable.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications:

  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Auto Liability Insurance
  • Reliable Transportation
  • Must be able to pass the following Background Checks:
  • Washington State Patrol (WSP WATCH) Criminal History Search
  • Complete Driving Record check

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Experience in Social Work
  • Motivational Interviewing training and/or experience
  • Verbal De-escalation training and/or experience
  • Familiarity with Fair Housing/ Harm Reduction and Housing First
  • Reflective Listening training and/or experience
  • Experience in working with culturally diverse populations
  • Basic computer skills and working knowledge of Word and Excel
  • Experience in reviewing security camera video footage
  • Experience using and entering data into Homeless Management Information System (HMIS) or other client databases.

Required Licensing and Certifications:

  • CPR/First Aid & Bloodborne Pathogens (May obtain at no cost within 6 months of hire)

Bona Fide Occupational Qualifications:

Must be at least 21 years of age according to program requirements.

Travel:

This position requires travel for Security Team meetings, trainings and other VOA events. This position is solely stationed at Hope House West: Residential & Shelter.

Physical Demands:

The employee is frequently required to remain in a stationary position (such as sitting or standing). The employee is also frequently required to move around inside and outside of various buildings and to ascend and descend stairs to check on properties and units, respond to calls, deliver notices to tenants, and access VOA offices.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move garbage, debris, as well as small to medium objects around the properties (up to 25 pounds) and occasionally lift and/or move large shelter items, such as furniture, etc. (up to 50 pounds). The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.
