Director of Nursing

Saint John Vianney Center (SJVC) is a licensed 50-bed psychiatric hospital providing behavioral health and addictive disease treatment for Clergy and Religious. Located in Downingtown, PA, SJVC is seeking qualified candidates for the Director of Nursing (DON) position. Reporting to the President, and partnering with the Clinical Director and Medical Director, the DON provides exemplary leadership in accordance with SJVC’s values, mission and philosophy.

At SJVC, the Director of Nursing leads our resident focused organization designed to support delivery of the highest quality of care and attract and develop a team of highly committed nursing staff. The DON is responsible for ensuring compliance of nursing care policies, procedures, systems and processes, as well as the management and supervision of all nursing staff. The DON collaborates consistently and routinely with clinical and administrative leadership in developing plans of care, including strategic, operating and financial plans to accomplish the positive patient care outcomes and goals of the department.

Educational Requirements:

Bachelors Nursing required; Master’s Nursing, Health Administration or related field preferred. Valid Registered Nurse license.

Experience:

Five years of clinical experience and two years of nursing management, preferably in a behavioral health setting. Previous experience in nursing leadership preferred.

Skills/Abilities:

Clinical: Ability to analyze data, synthesize and summarize information, make judgements regarding patient care. Develops, educates and implements ongoing plans of care based on acuity of patient needs. Knowledge of Standard Precaution Procedures.

Analytics: Knowledge of behavioral healthcare operations and data structures and the use of information system applications.

Communication: Demonstrated interpersonal/verbal communication skills. Ability to work effectively with the department staff and the treatment team, exemplifying principles of collegiality and collaboration at all times.

Regulatory: Demonstrates understanding of regulatory processes. Joint Commission (TJC) experience preferred.

Leadership: Capable of providing expertise in quality of care and hospital administration as an integral member of the senior leadership team.

Professional Development: Continuously explores and attains professional development in leadership, clinical processes and regulatory compliance.

Responsibilities:

  • Ensure all areas of accountability are compliant with federal, state and local regulatory standards and requirements.
  • Lead and demonstrate uncompromising adherence to ethical principles and organizational values.
  • Oversee the supervision of nursing staff and work schedules.
  • Ensure nursing staff are practicing within their scope of licensure.
  • Collaborate with clinical leadership to develop best practices and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Must possess the ability to plan, organize, develop, implement and interpret the Center’s goals, objectives, policies and procedures that are necessary for providing quality care.
  • Enforce the Center’s safety and health programs.
  • Lead staff in the area of Infection Control, maintaining and establishing protocols and providing resources.
  • Consistently displays “safe” work practices. Attends safety training and provides in-service education training sessions as required.
  • Make rounds daily on all shifts and as needed, with nursing staff to facilitate sound standards of Nursing Practice and principles of resident care.
  • Identifies areas of improvement and designs processes in order to enhance or maintain standards.
  • Develop policies, proactively, which will improve and enhance patient care and nursing functions.
  • Ensure staff have the necessary direction, authority and skills to complete assignments.
  • Monitors drug storage and prepares unused medications for destruction, as per policy, or delegates to appropriate staff.
  • Oversees onboarding and training of all new nursing staff, ongoing performance reviews and disciplinary actions.
  • Serves as a resource for recruitment, hire and termination of nursing and ancillary care staff.
  • Prepares and maintains department budget.
  • Ensure staff and residents are treated with respect, confidentiality is maintained. Complete tasks and assignments in a timely manner.
  • Lead a positive culture that is built upon open communication and trust.
