Our Adult Education Department operates ESOL, GED, certificate, employer and community classes for adults (16+).
The ESOL Instructor is responsible for teaching English skills, American culture and work-readiness to students with varying academic levels. This position helps students meet necessary goals and prepares students to navigate through daily life using English.
Essential Functions
- Teach English skills encompassing American culture and literature and work readiness skills.
- Stay in weekly contact with participants during class cycle.
- Observe and evaluate student's performance as well as students' readiness to take exam.
- Create lesson plans incorporating reading, differentiated, and direct explicit instruction and modify accordingly throughout the year based on curriculum.
- Maintain grade books and perform other administrative duties as needed.
- Work with program coordinators to ensure program as well as class goals are being met.
- Attend orientation for participants.
- Develop and revise Individual Learning Plans (ILP) for each student.
- Maintain an electronic portfolio for each student adding material at least 1x per week.
- Administer pre-, progress-, and post tests to evaluate skill gains.
- Maintain communication with students at least 12 months after program exit and follow up on their achievements and long-term goals.
- Complete Professional Development Courses.
- Other duties as assigned.
Position Specifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Education is preferred.
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- 2-3 years of teaching experience.
- Knowledge of adult learner and alternative educational methods and have the ability to apply these methods for adult, at-risk teens and multicultural students.
- Ability to teach students of diverse abilities and backgrounds and overcome barriers to success in a multi-level class.
- Ability to build a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of students.
- Must be able to communicate effectively both orally and through correct written grammar and usage.
- Maintain clean and professional classroom environment.
- Must demonstrate reliable and consistent work habits, enthusiasm, active observation, and ability to multi-task.
- Advanced computer skills required.
- Valid driver license and/or reliable transportation is required.
- Professional business attire and appearance required.
- Ability to pass a criminal background check.
Classes
- Classes meet twice a week during the morning (10 – 12 p.m.) or evening (6 – 8 p.m. or 7 - 9 p.m.)
- Available Locations: Dublin, Gahanna, Grove City, Hilltop, Merion Village, Reynoldsburg, Whitehall
8 hours per week and class |(~June 2023)
