Job Description:

Are you seeking a position with autonomy, significant responsibility, and a career broadening hands-on experience? Do you want an opportunity to be part of the team that provides support to Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Naval Station Norfolk, and Trident Refit Facility-King's Bay? Naval Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) and the Reactor Plant Contractors' Office (RPCO) Program is seeking Field Engineers for the Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) location in Norfolk, VA. The amount of maintenance and reactor servicing work in progress currently is energizing and you have the opportunity to be part of the team supporting NNSY and the ships in the Atlantic Fleet. RPCO-NNSY provides support for maintenance of aircraft carriers and submarines and also executes a significant reactor servicing workload. RPCO engineers operate in a fast paced, dynamic environment and independently exercise authority to ensure that work is conducted in a safe manner. RPCO field engineers are on-site representatives of NNL and Bechtel Plant Machinery, Inc. (BPMI). The selected candidate will provide engineering support and independent oversight of work associated with installation, testing, and modification of reactor plant systems, components, and safety systems. RPCO engineers are engaged during nuclear work and operations and are expected to influence and provide feedback to on-site management and partner organizations. This position involves direct interaction with Navy personnel, shipyard engineering, local government representatives, and partner organizations at NNL and BPMI. Successful completion of a job-specific Joint Test Group or Joint Refueling Group qualification is required for this position.

Training and qualification associated with this position is expected to take approximately 6-12 months, depending on previous experience, and a portion of the training will be conducted at the Knolls Laboratory Site in Schenectady, NY or Bettis Laboratory Site in West Mifflin, PA. At the conclusion of the qualification, the prospective RPCO Field Engineer will be expected to demonstrate an adequate understanding of the principles and details associated with reactor plant operation and testing or reactor servicing and the ability to function in an engineering and oversight capacity at a remote location.

This position is an exciting opportunity to be part of supporting the nuclear Navy. Opportunities to travel to other field locations may exist to support peak work periods. This is considered a 3 to 5 year assignment in a field office upon completion of qualification; after the assignment, relocation to a different NNL location or shipyard is expected.

Job Requirements:
  • Prior Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program operational or design experience.
  • Must be willing to relocate to shipyard and back to Laboratory after completion of 3-5 year assignment.
  • Must have ability to complete job specific Joint Test Group or Joint Refueling Group qualification.
