Over 300,000 residents in the St. Louis region live in areas that are more than one mile away from a supermarket and do not own a car. For that reason, the St. Louis MetroMarket bus exists. The MetroMarket bus is a mobile grocery store that brings healthy and affordable food to St. Louis food desert communities. We travel six days a week to ensure communities can shop and enjoy fresh produce, delicacies, meats and more.


Position Overview:

The Grocery Team directly assists the MetroMarket Coordinator and MetroMarket Operator in running the MetroMarket grocery store and Produce Delivery. Grocery Supports are involved in a rich variety of tasks and skills including customer service, produce display, quality control, community engagement, maintaining a clean and vibrant sales environment, and assisting with load on/load off. This position is fun and fast paced, requiring high energy, fast learning, a great attitude, and the ability to think on your feet. The job is also very physically active, requiring endurance, the ability to stand for the majority of an 8- 10 hour shift, and the strength to lift up to 25 lbs. Ultimately, this is a perfect entry level position for anyone interested in learning grocery operations, community engagement, nonprofit programming, and nutrition/healthy lifestyle.

Organization Overview:

Operation Food Search (OFS), a hunger relief organization based in St. Louis, MO, strengthens the safety net by empowering children, teens and adults with a range of innovative programs and services proven to reduce food insecurity and increase access to healthy and affordable food. We help feed 200,000 people every month. Recently, Operation Food Search and MetroMarket joined forces and are serving our community collaboratively. The St. Louis MetroMarket is a mobile farmers' market that serves neighborhoods in St. Louis with limited food access by providing direct access to fresh and affordable produce, meat, and staple goods and by advocating on the behalf of these communities on issues related to food justice, hunger, and health.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assists MetroMarket Coordinator and Operator with all produce related tasks, including: delivery, produce inventory, packing produce bags, and quality control.
  • Must be able to lift 25lbs
  • Light janitorial duties (sweeping, mopping, taking out trash).
  • Product knowledge of products sold on MetroMarket bus.
  • Loading and unloading products to and from the bus.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Maintain a spirit of friendliness, hospitality, and positivity.
  • Deliver and stock inventory of off-site programs.
  • Work closely with MetroMarket team to meet food-related and other needs of customers.


Preferred Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Demonstrates OFS core values.
  • Ability to establish positive interpersonal relationships with colleagues and program participants.
  • Ability to drive small transit vehicles.
  • Experience working in community health and/or foodservice.
  • Ability to read and understand maps and delivery instructions, and navigate various routes.
  • Must have Hep A vaccination.
  • Ability to work and communicate with diverse populations.
  • Ability to be an effective team member, listen to others, maintain confidentiality, and retain calm/professional demeanor.


Special Requirements:

  • Willingness to drive transit vans for food deliveries within the St. Louis area.
  • Willingness to assist with other OFS duties as required or as assigned.
  • Ability to stand for up to two hours at a time and lift 25 to 40lbs pounds.
