HUD-VASH Housing Navigator Job Description
The Housing Navigator supports Minnesota Assistance Council for Veterans’ (MACV) mission to end Veteran homeless by working closely with Veterans who have been awarded U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development-VA Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) housing voucher to locate and secure affordable housing. The Housing Navigator will work very closely with both MACV’s Landlord Engagement Program and the VA Mental Health Homeless Programs Team to prepare Veterans for housing search, identify affordable permanent housing units, and educate landlords on the benefits of renting to homeless Veterans in Minnesota. COMPENSATION: 48-54k
SUPERVISION REQUIRED The employee receives general supervision through MACV’s Landlord Engagement Program and collaborates with the VA Housing Team on day-to-day activities.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Provide direct housing search assistance to HUD-VASH enrolled Veterans, including:
- Support Veterans and their families in obtaining essential supporting documentation for voucher eligibility and housing search such as proofs of income and assets, government IDs, birth certificates, etc.
- Assist Veterans in searching for and applying to affordable housing.
- Transport participants to housing application appointments, housing authority appointments, and other agencies as needed.
- Assist Veterans in applying for MACV financial support with initial housing costs including application fees, move-in costs, and household furnishings.
- Commitment to treating all clients with dignity and respect, including Veterans with previous serious, justice involvement.
- Establish relationships with landlords to assist in locating appropriate housing, especially for Veterans who have multiple barriers to obtaining permanent housing.
- Work closely with other agencies providing supportive services to Veterans.
- Maintain records and documentation in accordance with MACV standards.
- Attend agency and community meetings and trainings.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS
- Knowledge of affordable housing basics, including Section 8, tax credits, PHA processes, Fair Housing, etc.
- Demonstrated success in related field: property management, case management, affordable housing compliance, etc.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Valid MN Driver’s License and access to reliable vehicle for transporting clients (mileage will be reimbursed at standard IRS rate).
- Lived experience of homelessness, housing instability, and/or justice involvement preferred.
- Ability to work independently with little direction.
- Commitment to maintaining confidentiality in all assignments as directed.
- Sound judgment in prioritizing projects and tasks.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $48,000.00 - $54,000.00 per year
