Full Time Interpretive Program Coordinator
Position Description
This is a Nevada Outdoor School (NOS) position that will be stationed at the California Trail Interpretive Center (CTIC) in Elko, Nevada. Work will be performed for and at CTIC. Outlined below are the responsibilities of the Education Program Technician as well as desired skills, experience, and benefits.

Mission of the California Trail Center: The California Trail Interpretive Center (CTIC) interprets the California Trail experience, its related themes, and provides educational and cultural enrichment to the general public. Through interpretation, the Trail Center will contribute to the appreciation and preservation of historic and cultural sites and, by forging strong community partnerships, enhance sustainable tourism in the region.
The NOS California Trail Interpretive Center Program Coordinator will:
§ Report directly to the California Trail Interpretive Center Supervisory Program Officer or Park Ranger, and NOS Elko Associate Director.
§ Position provides support for orienting visitors, providing education programs, staffing the front desk, providing sales and performing light maintenance around the site.
§ Act as a leader and positive role model for other NOS programs and CTIC staff.
- Always strive to uphold CTIC and NOS Mission and Core Values.
- Represent NOS, BLM and CTIC in a professional manner.
§ Actively engage with students, the public, staff, volunteers and others associated with the site in both individual and team settings.
- Seeks to advance knowledge, skills and abilities through the position to further their career potential.
- The position will work weekends and holidays throughout the year.
The Ideal Candidate:
§ Has a passion for history, teaching youth and communicating with inter-generational audiences.
§ Has knowledge of American history, cultural history and westward expansion.
§ Knowledge or training in education, public speaking, interpretation and communication.
§ Has keen awareness and curiosity of the world around them.
§ Has excellent customer service skills, and is a willing ambassador of the Bureau of Land Management and Nevada Outdoor School.
Specific Duties:
- Coordinate programs and events with staff, volunteers, and partner organizations.
- Present programs to diverse audiences. Programs will include natural and cultural history of the California Trail and will be presented both on and off site.
- Actively engage audiences to encourage participation and develop personal connections with the California National Historic Trail.
- Builds relationships with schools through outreach efforts.
- Must have a current driver’s license with a clean driving record.
- Greets visitors at the front desk.
- Presents in person demonstrations both on and off-site.
- Develop and deliver a minimum of two interpretive programs each month.
§ Develop written interpretive outlines for programs in accordance with Interpretation Standards
- Performs as part of a team of NOS and BLM staff and partners.
- Will perform odd jobs around the site, such as set-up and break down for events, mounting art work and displays, transporting materials, moving wagons, maintaining bohoghani (wiki-ups) or other light duty maintenance around the site.
Qualifications/Skills Desired:
§ Self-starter, self-motivated, ability to work with minimal supervision.
§ Ability to participate as an effective team member.
§ Ability to work independently.
§ Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
§ Knowledge of American history, research, pioneer skills and crafts.
§ Knowledge of or interest in interpretive techniques.
§ Experience in website searches and content management.
Benefits:
- This is a full time 40 hour a week position. Starting wage is $16 per hour. Typical workdays are Tuesday - Saturday.

Worksite:
California Trail Interpretive Center (Trail Center) is located 8 miles west of Elko Nevada just off
I–80. The Trail Center is administered by the Bureau of Land Management, Elko District Office. Work will be performed inside the Trail Center, on the center grounds, and off site. This is a great opportunity to gain experience in preparing and delivering education programs.
Nevada Outdoor School’s Elko office is located at 2363 N. 5th Street, Elko, Nevada.
